Crete (Heraklion) accommodation ideas needed

We've decided to spend the Easter break in Greece, thanks to an Ancient Greece mad 10 year old. Plan is to spend 5 days on the mainland and then to fly to Heraklion to see Knossos and other sites as well as doing some hiking. I'm looking for accommodation ideas. We will have a car and have travelled quite a lot with the kids (8 and 10) but we aren't really ones for poolside/kids club/ resort type holidays. We would prefer somewhere with nice local restaurants, maybe a heated pool for a swim, self catering or half- board perhaps but definitely not all-inclusive, as we plan to be out and about. Any ideas would be gratefully received. I've never been to Crete before do we are starting from scratch. Can't wait though 🙂

Don't stay in Heraklion - it's a dump!

We stayed near Heraklion in a small resort called Agia Pelagia. It is about 30 minutes to Heraklion and to Knossos.
