Holidays
Montenegro

Looking to go away 1st couple of weeks of october and fancy Montenegro. Its just the 2 of us , late 50s so sight seeing and good place for photography. Would like to be able to swim as well.
Which areas are the best for a nice relaxing holiday?
Gone2far · 06/09/2019 17:17
If it would help, I'll tell you what we did when we went a year or 2 ago. We are about your ages . We started by flying into Split (not Montenegro I know, but very photogenic). Then on hydrofoil to a couple of islands for a night or 2 each. Korcula is especially beautiful. Then ferry to mainland.
We had a day in Dubrovnik, but hated it - all the cruise boats have ruined it but you're out of cruising season so might be fine.
Then bus to Perast. It's very attractive but very small, on the edge of the ria. Then Kotor. Again very attractive but not enough there to keep you there for too long.
We had a walking holiday for a few days from there, going to Cetinje, and it was amazing. I could tell you more if you were interested. Oh yes, we also had a boat ride to Virpazar, on the very large lake that separates Montenegro from Albania. Lots of birds to see on that day.
Then a wonderful train journey from Podgorica to Kolasin, which is a pleasant resort next to a national park.
Sorry if this isn't your cup of tea - but you might find it useful.

For swimming, you are better off on the Croatian islands. The ria that Perast and Kotor is on is very beautiful but, when we went, it wasn't recommended that you swam in it. If you go to Kolasin, the main hotel has an Olympic size pool in the basement.

.. I think I may have gone on a bit, but we had such a wonderful holiday there that I got carried away!

Thank you
Sounds really lovely, does sound like our sort of holiday
We were looking at a hotel in Perast which does look pretty.
I didnt mean swimming in the sea, but just wondering if it will be warm enough for an outdoor pool
Gone2far · 06/09/2019 19:18
Bear in mind that Perast is tiny, with not much in the way of things to do. A busy road runs all the way round the ria, so I'm not sure how much walking you could do and, strangely enough, no boats running to Kotor, though this may have changed. I would strongly recommend Virpazar, at least for part of the holiday. [There should be a 'sorry for being bossy' emoticon, but I just remember getting into Perast, walking through it in 10 minutes, coming out the other side and thinking 'is this all?' And it was].

We stayed in Kotor for a week in Kotor Vista apartments, very good location for views across the water to the old.town, and walking distance to town. The pool was big and in a gorgeous setting. We hired a car and drove to the Lustica peninsula a few times to swim, there was a lovely beach and also visited the village of Rose which was big time photogenic. You can stay there at Forte Rose, it's breath takingky gorgeous but the staff were very rude, I wouldn't want to stay there!!! I'd recommend Kotor though. The old town is wonderful. I loved wandering round and looking in the churches, walking up to the fort and eating in the outside cafes it was a lovely happy relaxing holiday. We went in summer. Not sure what the weather would be like in October. Have a Fab holiday
We flew.into Dubrovnik btw and drove over the border. But much easier if you can fly to Tivat. Be prepared for tiny roads and crazy driving

Spent a month in Croatia (wonderful) and drove over the border into Montenegro. Most insane driving I have ever seen in my life.
bruffin · 10/09/2019 20:39
Thanks everyone, we've booked the Kotor Vista apartments for 10 nights, so we can have nice relaxing holiday.
Babs20 · 11/09/2019 15:56
Fab, enjoy! Please report back and let us know how you got on. Would love to know what it is like in October

I too have been to Perast. It's very photogenic. Small, but it does have some restaurants and at least one bar. It's gorgeous. Transport when I went ten years ago was a little iffy, we had to go through it on a bus to Kotor (they wouldn't let us off), and then take a minibus shuttle thing which seemed pretty regular. I don't even think there was a timetable. I found it interesting that Kotor is more of a focus than Perast, it's not particularly idyllic in comparison.

Hi Babs20, we are here and love the Kotor Vista
Weve hired a car and now sitting top of a mountain looking over Bay of Kotor.
We had a bad storm wednesday night and it rained all day yesterday. But its lovely and sunny today around 22. The pool is a bit icy but ok in the sun.

Glad you're having a great time. We love Montenegro. I volunteer for Kotor Kitties, a charity that focusses on sterilising the many cats there to reduce abandoned and unwanted kittens in the area. You can check us out on Facebook and Instagram !

I did find Kotor Kitties the other day ,Itsreallyonlyme. I was wondering if they were neutered or not and google sent me to Kotor Kitties.

We stayed in a gorgeous villa on the bay of kotor and loved it a few years back. Are you going to try and head over to Lake Skadar, bruffin? We hugely enjoyed our visit there, and boat tour is fun.
bruffin · 12/10/2019 08:47
im back
We did go to Lake Skadar. Had a lovely 2 hour boat tour then drove up to the viewing point and looked down on the oxbow, its is a very beautiful country.
We only had one day of rain/storm and maybe a couple of cloudy days out of the 10. It was a nice temperature throughout. Our receptionist said that we were lucky and usually would expect more rain, but the storm was unusual in October.
