If I like Rethymnon in Crete

Just got back from 2 weeks about 15 mins from Rethymnon and absolutely loved the place. Can anyone suggest somewhere similar for next year? A resort on another Greek island would be great but open to all suggestions.

Just to add what I liked about the place - lovely old town to wander round in the evenings with lots of great restaurants. Not too fussed about the beach as tended to go to other beaches in the daytime.

That sounds like the place I'm looking for. Was the 15 minutes walking distance?

Anjelika · 14/08/2019 16:02

No. It was a 15 mins drive but we like being away from it a bit on holiday. Sure you could find something a lot nearer or even in Rethymnon.

What about Kotor in Montenegro or Rovinj in Croatia?

EnglishGirlApproximately · 14/08/2019 22:39

Rhodes Town maybe. Chania would be ideal but it’s Crete again, absolutely gorgeous though. Kotor sounds like it would be good and if you aren’t bothered about a beach Funchal is a great town to potter around in.

Peniscola in Spain. Fly to Reus. Great beach if you've got kids. Old town is fab. We always stay in a gorgeous villa out of town. 10mins drive.

growlingbear · 14/08/2019 22:54

You could try the Greek mainland - somewhere like Nauplion or you could try Corsica - the inland hill town of Sartene is gorgeous, and you;re never far from a beach.

I love Crete. Want to go back.

littlecupcake · 15/08/2019 05:50

Following - we stayed in the old town of Rethymnon before we had DCs and absolutely loved it. We want to go back but I doubt the hotels in the town have big enough pools to keep the children happy and they wouldn't consider wandering round tavernas and people watching 'entertainment'!

EssentialHummus · 15/08/2019 06:08

Chania, as pp said.

flumpybear · 15/08/2019 06:11

Where did you stay? I went to one called something like the White Palace which was about that close to Rethy-flip-flop a few years ago - it was lovely!

Egg · 15/08/2019 06:14

Ahhh is the restaurant Alana still there in Rethymnon? We went about six years ago and loved it.

bookgirl1982 · 15/08/2019 06:35

Kalkan or Kas in Turkey

Lwmommy · 15/08/2019 06:47

@littlecupcake Platanais in Crete is only a short drive/bus/taxi from Rethymnon and about 10 miles from Chania. There are lots of hotels and villas with pools there.

Lwmommy · 15/08/2019 06:49

Sorry my distance to Chania was based on google and turns out there are 2 places called Platanias. I have been to the rethymnon one and loved it.

EssentialHummus · 15/08/2019 07:07

The Platanias near Chania (on Kissamou Chanion Rd, if that's clearer) is not lovely in the hotels and villas sense - it's a bustling resort town popular with the Scandi versions of Thomas Cook and Tui. Sounds like the Rethymnon one is nicer!

Anjelika · 15/08/2019 08:58

Thanks for all the suggestions. Will check some of those out. Would go back to Crete but we explored western Crete quite thoroughly and fancy exploring somewhere new next year. We stayed in a villa rather than hotel.

Lindos on Rhodes ticks all those boxes 😊

SooticaTheWitchesCat · 15/08/2019 11:35

Bodrum in Turkey in similar.

Anjelika · 15/08/2019 13:58

@margotsdevil Can I ask whether Lindos has a good number of shops and restaurants as it is described as a "village" when I look online. How about Rhodes Town? Would that be more suitable do you think?

Sooverthemill · 15/08/2019 14:01

Parga, lefkhada, symi, in Greece
PALMA - Majorca
Dubrovnik- Croatia
Bodrum or marmaris - turkey
Lisbon - Portugal

margotsdevil · 15/08/2019 14:31

@Anjelika depends what you mean by a good number, we were there for a week and I don't think we went anywhere twice. It's not huge but obviously no where near the size of Rhodes Town. It's definitely got plenty of choice and is also lovely Smile

WaitingInTheBushesOfLove · 15/08/2019 14:44

Rhodes Rhodes, i loved rhodes! If you decide to go there stay in rhodes town. There is the old medieval town there you can explore. When i went years ago we rented a car and drove to lindos. Also, to the butterfly park, very beautiful place. Lots of things you can explore in Rhodes provided you drive

Anjelika · 15/08/2019 17:38

@WaitingInTheBushesOfLove we always hire a car as we like to stay a bit out of town and get around during the daytime. Will def look at Rhodes now!

I absolutely love Rhodes Town it’s beautiful. It’s a really easy Island to get around too, with or without a car. One of my favourite days out was going to see Mussolini’s Villa, Swiss chalet design on a Greek island. We stopped for the best roadside bbq gyros on the way for about €2 Smile
