Tenerife or Lanzarote

We have decided to risk Brexit chaos and go away October half term. We have never been on a family package holiday before due to family living worldwide and are looking at either Tenerife or Lanzarote to try and guarantee weather. Does anyone have any advice regarding best resorts/hotels etc? 2 DD 10 and 13, like were reports etc

Gran Canaria is nicer!

KitKat1985 · 07/08/2019 17:36

Personally I've been to both and prefer Tenerife. It's also warmer in 'real feel' as Lanzarote tends to have quite strong coastal winds that means it can actually feel quite chilly at times.

Lanzarote is much quieter and traditional than Tenerife and Gran Canaria in my experience.... costa techies tends to be very windy.... particularly in October/November.... puerto del carmen has some lovely hotels and is the busiest resort... some beautiful restaurants in the old town.... playa Blanca has the calmest weather... least breezy and lots of super hotels. Depending on your budget the princess yaiza is beautiful as are any of the H10 hotels. I often see deals in arrecife (main town) at that time of year.... the arrecife gran hotel is particularly good and there is a lovely harbour with great restaurants. I would absolutely hire a car and visit places like Famara on the west/ NW and Orzola in the north.

Apology for the lack of capitals!

fussychica · 07/08/2019 18:23

Lanzarote for me, especially Playa Blanca which I love. Tenerife weather is best in the south but the resorts in the north are nicer.

Thanks all - looks about even!

Lanzarote is lovely, we've been twice. Can recommend Seaside Los Jameos in Puerto del Carmen, fab hotel.

CarriMarie · 08/08/2019 10:56

Lanzarote is nicer, especially around Cala Blanca/Papagayo area.

TokyoSushi · 08/08/2019 10:59

We're currently in Playa Blanca, by the pool as I type! We've also been to Corralejo in Fuerteventura, I'd recommend Corralejo!

We really liked Playa Blanca in Lanzarote and would go back. We stayed at the Sandos Papagayo. Haven't been to Tenerife, but have been to Gran Canaria, which we thought wasn't as nice - very built up, some ugly industry of the cement works and power station type along the east coast, weather was more mixed and inland tended to be cloudy and chilly. Puerto de Mogan was lovely though and we enjoyed staying there.

NotWavingButMNing · 09/08/2019 15:57

I like both at different times of year and for different ages.
Playa Blanca in Lanzarote is great if you have little ones but not so much for teens.
I like Puerto Del Carmen for a winter holiday, which October probably is. Costa Adeje in Tenerife has something for everyone as does Corralejo in Fuerta. Corralejo however is very, very windy and even in July last year the evenings were cool.
Not keen on Gran Canaria.

Depends on your budget but we had a great deal one Easter with BA to the Abama (Ritz Carlton) in Tenerife - nice 5* hotel resort, really lovely pools/suites etc. We went into the nearest little town once or twice for dinner but were all happy to hang out in the resort most of the time for just a week. Kids were 10 and 8 at the time and loved it, and I think there's lots to do for older teens if they like sporty stuff. Only downside was crazy prices for on-site restaurants. Tbh I didn't love the island itself, not particularly pretty like the Balearics, but the hotel was lovely.

Morocco is also brilliant for weather that time of year, there are some lovely places just outside Marrakech, or Essaouira on the coast. Flights more but v cheap for eating etc.

TokyoSushi · 10/08/2019 13:03

I take it back, still in Playa Blanca, had only discoveted a tiny part when I wrote the other day, now discovered the naice part, it's absolutely lovely - go!

Ellabella989 · 10/08/2019 13:05

Costa Adeje in Tenerife is very nice with a huge beach and Europe’s biggest water park (Siam)

dickyduckydido · 10/08/2019 19:59

So, think have narrowed it down to Costa Adeje or Playa Blanca. Any hotel recommendations?

We’ve stayed in Costa teguise and playa Blanca on lanzarote and preferred playa Blanca. We stayed in what was the iberostar papagayo but I think it closed or was changed. Costa teguise was too windy.

Tried fuertaventura but too windy and weather v changeable. Sailed to playa blanca in lanzarote everyday to escape the weird weather! We’d look across and see one big cloud over fuertaventura every day!

Went to gran canaria and it was very cockroachy where we stayed (near the big dunes, can’t remmeber the name now). Didn’t like it there.

2catsand2kids · 10/08/2019 20:27

We stayed at the Rubicon Palace in Playa Blanca and would definitely recommend it.

rookiemere · 10/08/2019 21:15

Iberostar Anthelia in Costa Adeje is lovely, but very pricey.

Ellabella989 · 10/08/2019 21:51

Gran hotel in Costa Adeje

Bartlet · 10/08/2019 21:58

Elba Royal village resort in Playa Blanca was brilliant but we also walked past many of the other resorts mentioned here and they all looked nice. Playa Blanca is definitely the best in lanzarote.

TokyoSushi · 10/08/2019 22:22

The H10 Ocean Princess looks nice here (Playa Blanca)

lashy · 10/08/2019 23:17

Tenerife gets my vote.

Went to First Choice Holiday Village in Tenerife. Was spotlessly clean with great selection of food
Day trip to Siam Park (massive water park, as mentioned upthread) was fab.
Don't recall being bothered by the wind.

Went to Costa Teguise in Lanzarote (many years ago) and recall it being very windy.

fuzzyduck1 · 13/08/2019 22:03

Anywhere that’s not Tenerife got robbed there.

OakDining · 15/08/2019 17:06

When we we have been to Lanzarote we’ve found it incredibly cheap to eat out. Much cheaper and much nicer than Fuerteventura for example. But I don’t know how it compares to Tenerife!

dickyduckydido · 20/08/2019 07:52

Booked! Gone for Costa Adeje. Thanks for all the advice. If anyone has any particular excursions trips etc which were good, happy to hear!
