Where to stay in Croatia?

Dear All,
I'm looking to book a weeks holiday in August for me and my 12 year old son. I like the look of doing several of the day activities organised by Croatia Family Holidays (as suggested by another mumsnetter in another thread). They pick up / drop off at Podstrana, Split; Omis; Makarska and Trogir. I plan to fly to Split - which of these places is the best to stay at? Any advice gratefully received :)

I went to Croatia last year and stayed in split, really liked it, easy to walk around in. We went 3 or 4 day trips by ferry.

If you fancy going to different island every day Split is ideal. However, if you want to stay put be aware its a very busy city, especially in the height of summer precisely because all the ferries depart from there and all the facilities it offers. I prefer Trogir, it's lovely, also busy and though it offers less choice of island trips, shops, restaurants etc it is only a bus ride away from Split.

Depends what you want really, I would agree with @fussychica Split is great, but very busy while Trogir is a bit quieter (apart from the aircraft noise from the nearby airport!) and much smaller. Also found it cheaper for accommodation. There is a boat between Split and Trogir (Bura line) which takes about an hour, so one can easily be visited from the other. Split is a better base if you want to do lots of day trips, especially if using public transport. Haven't been to the other places you listed.
