Packing a phone as a gift

People who travel a lot, I need your advice please.
Namechanged as DH knows my MN username, but have been posting for years.
It's DH birthday while we are on holiday. Sunny European destination.
I have got him a new expensive mobile phone for his birthday which I know he's been hankering after.
How do I pack it? In my case? Pros; he won't see it, it will be out of the way something less for hand luggage bag. Cons, apparently the lithium battery thing is a travel issue in suitcases, it could get nicked if bag has to be opened, if x-ray machine scans case it might mean phone is removed? (I am guessing here)
Hand luggage; What do I do at security? phone is in sealed box, I do have the John Lewis receipt though, what if they want me to open the phone and turn it on? DH will see it. (It's not the end of the world if he sees his pressie, but I would rather he didn’t)
I honestly am not sure what to do. Any help much appreciated
TIA

Just put it in hand luggage (as a ‘valuable item’ it is unlikely to be covered by insurance if it goes in hold luggage and gets damaged or goes missing). Phones aren’t like laptops that you have to put through separately so there should be no issue.

If its in hand luggage it will need to come out of the bag to be screened separately so there's a risk he will see it.

Leave it in the bag and it should be picked up by the X-ray machine which will mean they will then rescan your bag in the slow lane as punishment.

You might have to give him the phone before or after the holiday, or risk him seeing it at security.

I would just give it to him before you go.

Hand luggage. I’ve never had to take my phone out, just Kindle/iPad/laptop.

Phones do not need to be taken out of bags, just laptops and tablets. It will be fine in your hand luggage.

Hand luggage and send dh ahead of you to get stuff on the other side (say you will stay behind to push it through) then tell the security person on the conveyor belt that there is a phone in a box in your bag that is a present for dh and do they want you to pull it out. I almost guarantee that they will tell the person on the scan machine and it will sail through. I have sent through various bits of complicate medical machinery with this method and not had to pull them out. If they ask you to pull it out, ask the, to pull your bag for secondary processing so that you can keep it a secret. Just go early!
