Will be in Athens for the weekend and thought of flying out to an Island to extend the holiday but I'm worried they'll be shut or the weather will be crap!

Athens will be fine as it’s a city, depends on which island you want to go to, smaller ones resorts/villages will be shutting down to the minimum as seasonal workers go back to the mainland. Late October weather could be quite pleasant or there could be thunder storms.

I was thinking of Kephalonia....but read the weather could be rubbish in October.

I'd extend the holiday in Athens, there's a huge amount to see & do. And yes, the islands do virtually shut off-season.

Kephalonia is in the Ionians and they do start to get rain from the end of September. Season will be over by October and many places shut as the owners go away for the winter.
