Diazepam for flying

missyB1 · 07/07/2019 15:36

Can I ask has anyone taken this for fear of flying? My GP has prescribed it for me as i can no longer deal with my phobia about flying. Usually I just suck it up and spend the flight feeling nauseous with anxiety but it's getting worse and i decided to ask for a sedative this time.
I fly tomorrrow to Menorca. Planning to take a diazepam in the airport about an hour before I get on the plane, is that right? And what about getting it through security, do I put it in the clear plastic bag and show it? The box has my name and the contents clearly displayed (usual pharmacy sticker).
Lastly does it help?
Thanks for any advice.

I took this last year for fear of flying ( the claustrophobia if it) and it did really help. I got 2mg tablets and took one before I left for airport, then another at the airport. I actually fell asleep on the plane which I’ve never been able to do before.

On the return journey I took a third one when boarding as we ended up getting delayed when already in our seats and I could myself getting anxious.
I had mine in the box, inside a clear plastic bag in my hand luggage.
They never even got looked at.
Enjoy your holiday!

I have it. Hell yes it helps. I would take one at check in, one on boarding depending on advice from doctor about dosage.
Don't drink alchohol although I have and it was the quickest flight ever as I passed out

Oh thanks flipflopped I'm glad to hear it works! Did you get it out of your hand luggage to put in the tray at security?

Yup also had it for flying (2mg wasn't really enough so took 3 or 4 if I recall) and also had it in my hand luggage and no one said anything!

missyB1 · 07/07/2019 15:44

Ha Ha Hepzibah good advice, definitely won't be drinking as it's a 9am flight!

Yes I did and it just went though the machine with no problem they never checked anything. As long as it’s got the label on with your name and/or the paper prescription you’ll be fine. It’s such a common medication to be travelling with you’ll have no problems Smile

Ok great feel I'm feeling more reassured now, had visions of them taking it off me! I get nervous about going through security for unknown reason, I'm always expecting them to give me a hard time or be really unfriendly! Tbh I find the whole airport business stressful.

I was given Diazepam for something else, just for a couple of days, many years ago. It was definitely soothing, very nice indeed, so am sure it will help you with flying.

mummymeister · 08/07/2019 11:45

I take it for my fear of flying and have done for the past 20+ years. gradually reducing the amount that I take and last year I took my first flight on my own. I used to take a huge quantity but am now down to about 2mg . I always tell the attendant when I board that I am a nervous flyer and that helps I have found too.

peachgreen · 08/07/2019 11:58

Yes, it's absolutely brilliant for flying. It makes me sleepy in larger doses but just 2mg is enough to take the edge off the anxiety but still be alert. I've never taken it out of my handbag for security - oops. Will be more careful from now on!

missyB1 · 08/07/2019 17:39

Well update I took 2mg. I felt ok till take off then the usual panic arose. I will take 2 tablets (4mg) for the flight home. On the upside Menorca is lovely!

Quite right to take two, no point in feeling anxious, it's masochistic. Glad you're enjoying yourself.

Zoflorabore · 09/07/2019 03:24

Hi op, glad you are enjoying your hols :)

We fly to Turkey on Saturday which is a 4 hour flight. I am also a nervous wreck when flying, have been this way for 30 years since I first flew age 11.

I take diazepam anyway for my anxiety and OCD ( 2X 2mg daily ) and have been on it for 5 years, initially at a huge dose.

I know that 2mg will do nothing for me whilst flying so my GP has given me a 5mg tablet for each way. They definitely do help.

I've been done the fear of flying course and still no better, I just keep the thought of the holiday firmly in my head. Doesn't quite work for the way home but I tend to have a small drink to ease my nerves if possible.

AliciaMayEmory · 09/07/2019 06:16

Op, if you have enough, start taking them the night before you fly home, then one when you get up, one at the airport etc so that they are in your system well before you get on the plane. Just taking at the airport doesn't work for me, I need to start a little earlier. Have a wonderful holiday!

sneakypinky · 09/07/2019 06:47

I take 1 the night before, 1 when I get up for the airport, and 1 before boarding, so 3 x 2mg.

CupoTeap · 09/07/2019 07:03

Op do you have to drive from the airy?

CupoTeap · 09/07/2019 07:03

That said airport when I pressed post Confused

missyB1 · 09/07/2019 16:54

No driving luckily, we booked taxis both ways to the airport. On the way home I will take one first thing in the morning and another when we’ve checked in at the airport and see how I get on.

Will Diazepam help me sleep on a flight?
I don't get anxious but always feel unwell flying unless I can sleep.
Going on a long flight later this year and am looking for something that will knock me out for 6+hours.

legallyconfused1 · 09/07/2019 17:02

I have them for flying too but they always seem to give me a walloping headache - not sure if it’s coincidence or bad luck. So I spend the flight feeling relaxed but pained Grin

Autumn101 · 09/07/2019 17:07

Well done on doing the flight OP, it’s a huge achievement when it causes so much anxiety!

I take Xanax (not in UK so not sure if you can get it there?) and find it helps a lot, shorter acting than diazepam so I recover from it quite quickly. I take one a night for 3/4 nights before flying as my anxiety makes my sleep awful which in turn makes me feel even worse! Then on the day on flight, one as soon as I wake up, one on boarding and one halfway through the flight depending on how I feel.

Have a 7.5 hour flight on Friday and today’s been tough.........

missyB1 · 09/07/2019 17:14

The fear has been getting worse every year I’m not sure why 🤔 a few years ago I had to fly to New Zealand, it took nearly two days start to finish and I didn’t sleep the whole journey I was so anxious. I was ill by the time we arrived not surprisingly!
