Car seats for holidays

We are off to Menorca in September with our 3 year old DD1 and DD2 (who will be 3 months when we travel). Last year we had a nightmare with hiring a car seat for our then 2 year old. The seat we were given initially was old and didnt fit the car or DD1 properly. We were offered various replacements none of which were much better. I'm worried about something similar happening this year and so I'm considering taking our own. Our 3 year old has a GB vaio isize which is a huge heavy seat and the baby is in a cybex cloud q. Both are quite expensive seats and so I'm wondering about buying two lighter cheaper seats for the trip. Am I being over the top? Does anyone have any recommendations for cheap but good seats that would be suitable for taking on flights (ie as light and compact as possible).

Will your 3 year old be able to use a booster by then? My 2.5 year old is very tall and heavy so into the 18kg+ range. He has a trunki boostapak for abroad and we take it on as his hand luggage.

Otherwise I'd try to find a cheap car seat for each if them, I'd be worried about the expensive ones getting damaged.

We have taken our own car seats on holiday for the last 2 years (coincidentally to Menorca too!) the car seat hire was going to be more expensive than the actual car hire which is completely ridiculous. We got another set of 'holiday car seats' and took an extra case for them which worked out cheaper. I did see some someone book the car seats on with luggage on there own but I wouldn't risk this incase of damage. I would definitely recommend paying out for holiday car seats.
