Which Greek island shall we visit?

Going to greece for 7 or 8 nights in August. Me, DH and DS, aged 19.
We like beaches, bars, cafés, history. The norm. We’re not rolling in dosh and usually spend £800-1000 a week on an apartment/house self catering when we go away. Not hugely fussed about how modern it is, but location is important.

Which island looks good? Written off Mykonos as too expensive. Rhodes (Lindos) looks nice, but a tad pricey for what you get and maybe too touristy. Paros looks nice but flights are extortionate and we have little time for ferries and the risks that entail. Naxos too looks good.

We’ve been to Santorini and liked it, but not sure it’s a place to go with DS Wink

went to rhodes a few years back. there was one main young getting drunk resport but the rest of the island was no more touristy than any other greek island. accommodation is pretty cheap in cyprus. or have you looked at crete? over the years we have stayed in kefalonia, and thassos which we liked but not sure how much rentals are now which i guess is your decider

Zante, Crete, Skiathos? All would fit your bill. Or how about starting somewhere cheap to get to such as Corfu and doing a bit of island hopping?

I absolutely love Rhodes Town.

if you are set against Rhodes then how about Crete?

Holdingtherope · 09/06/2019 10:41

I would go to Corfu. Then straight on ferry to Albania. Really up and coming. Cheap as chips!

I went to skiathos years ago, it was absolutely beautiful with some stunning beaches. The take off is a little terrifying though because of the short runway Confused

Flights to Crete tend to be good value. If you stay somewhere near Chania, you'll find good bus services and plenty to do.

We've loved Kos, Crete and Rhodes. Going to Kephalonia this year - think it'll be very different!

Samos (not Samos City though) - cheap flights via Athens or one of the package companies do holidays there.

Lots of history and the locals very friendly.

Look at Folegandros, it is a tiny island.. not touristy, beautiful beaches

We go to sidari in Corfu regularly- lovely beaches, great food and a little strip if you like bars etc. It has it all really - beware though once you’ve visited you’ll want to back again and again

Lefkada is lovely (and cheap). It's a bit south of Corfu. Lots of boat trips, swimming, snorkeling, and sunshine

Have a look at the visit Greece website, it's really helpful at choosing places.

There are some lovely places a couple of hours drive from Athens. Have a look at ancient Epidavros and Nafplio.

Naxos is fabulous, but no direct flights from here. You can fly to Mykonos and take a quick ferry. Or fly to Athens and take the tiny Olympic flight to Naxos.
