Hi i’ve Been reading conflicting advice regarding currency to take and am now a little confused.
I know I can change once I get there, but could anyone advise for a taxi from the airport to the hotel do I need to take Barbados Dollars or US dollars please ?
Also any tips appreciated we are staying on the West Coast and fly this weekend for a week.
Thank you

I’ve always taken US dollars. Whereabouts on the west coast are you staying? Depending on the resort tips are appreciated, in some AI’s they’re completely banned though.

It really doesn't matter! They accept US dollars readily - the Barbadian dollar is pegged to the US dollar in terms of rate as well.

When we've gone, I've always taken a mixture of both, my thinking being that they would probably prefer to use their own currency - but also having some US in hand.

Thank you both, it’s on my list to get currency tomorrow, so I will try to pickup both. We are staying on the West Coast at the Tamarind . This is our first trip to Barbados, all really looking forward to it.

I'm very envious! Barbados is my favourite place.

As you're on the West coast, I'd really recommend trying to book a trip with Marvin Sobers - he has a small glass-bottomed boat and will take you out to snorkel, swim with the turtles and do a bit of fishing. He's on facebook and his contact details are all there. He's based at Holetown, on the West coast.

By the way, it's a really safe place for getting around and about, so don't just stay in your hotel all the time (although it looks lovely!)

US dollars. You really don't need Barbados dollars. When you spend US dollars, you are automatically given your change in Barbados dollars.

The Tamarind! We go every year - it is fabulous! Look out for Etta at the omelette station - she will teach you how to cook eggs and loves a chat. Have a wonderful week. The tamarind can organise a taxi for you but think it's quite expensive. It's about a 45 minute drive. We take US and BD. BD needed for buses and small beach bars.

Thank you all so much, BIWI will definitely look at the boat and we are very much looking forward to getting out and exploring. We are only bed and breakfast as we like going out to eat and see other places.
tastylancs I have already warned my dh that if I love it, it will need to become a regular fixture in the holiday diary 😀 he was a bit surprised 😀. Having not been to Barbados before, I found choosing a hotel with so much choice rather difficult, I spent a long while on mumsnet researching, so thank you for the Pre trip reassurance.

So just need to pack now and take dog to the kennels, I have loads of sun cream and rash vests for water sports, but if there is anything that you take as you can’t get it locally please say.

Thanks so much again

A couple of (pretty random) things to know:

  1. clothes with camouflage patterns are not allowed, so make sure none of you have any of those

  2. codeine is also illegal, so if you use anything like Solpadeine, make sure you either hide it very well or find an alternative medicine.

Notwatchingtvtoday · 08/06/2019 15:11

Thank you I did not know either of those things so will double check our packing

I didn’t know that either. I’ve been going to Barbados every year since forever and I always take the same first aid kit that has a packet of Nurofen Plus (ibuprofen and codeine)in Shock. I’ll make sure I don’t take it next time, I can’t believe I didn’t know that!

BrainScience · 08/06/2019 17:56

Although I’ve now just Googled it and you can buy paracetamol and codeine and ibuprofen and codeine OTC in Barbados in exactly the same quantities as you can here Confused.

BIWI · 08/06/2019 18:39

That's weird! Maybe they've changed things now? TBH I always take Solpadeine in my luggage anyway!
