Where to stay enroute to Winter Efteling

Hi everyone
I'm planning to book a trip to Efteling over New Year (our first time) but would ideally like to tag on a few nights somewhere enroute. I'm toying with Amsterdam (also never been) but am not sure whether it'll be very nice at that time of the year. From what I've read, it's likely to be very cold and very dull. Has anyone been in December or does anyone have any other suggestions?

It won’t be any more cold and dull than in the UK, the weather is roughly the same. Amsterdam is lovely all times of year. :)

The annual Amsterdam light festival runs from November to January. There are lots of spectacular light sculptures around the canal ring, the River Amstel and other special locations. You can wander around and explore them at your leisure, or follow one of the dedicated routes. There’s also a special canal cruise called Water Colours which is a good way to view most of them.

Are you flying in or driving. Amsterdam is beautiful city, won't be dull!

If driving up from Dunkirk, Calais then try Bruges or Ghent.
