I have been before but earlier in the year. Dd and dp really want to go do we just cover oursleves in bug spray and cover up and go or is it unbearable and unsuitable for a five year old?

I was thinking along the same lines but dp said that we are going to be hot anyway as we are in Florida and they both really want to go as do the other people who want to go with us.

We will be on holiday. Dd wants to do this as much as she wants to go to disney and tbh it has always been the most memorable parts of my times in florida but I have never been at this timew of year.

NO.

It's hotter than hell, full of mosquitos and may also be hit by a hurricane.

alipigwidgeon · 22/07/2007 16:54

NO - way too hot and full of bugs. Seconding everything Expat said. FYI, in June in Florida it was 98c and 99 % humidity. And it August it's worse than that.

twinsetandpearls · 22/07/2007 18:36

is it going to be a lot worse than orlando and the gulf coast?

OP posts:
twinsetandpearls · 22/07/2007 18:37

we have already booked our holiday as a teacher I can only go longhaul in August as it is the only time I can get two weeks plus off work.

OP posts:
oooggs · 22/07/2007 18:44

I wouldn't do it. Have been to those parts Oct - Jan only

twinsetandpearls · 22/07/2007 18:48

do you mean the whole of florida or just the everglades?

OP posts:
twinsetandpearls · 22/07/2007 18:49

am now dreading a holiday we have been planning for ages.

I would not go to the Everglades or indeed any bit of Florida in August. Not for any amount of money, either.

Especially NOT the Everglades. It's just too fucking hot. I know no other way of putting it.

It's also been raining there constantly for over a month on end.

So we're talking probably temps at or near 100 degrees (or even over) with humidity in the 90%+ range.

And wet.

Sorry, but that's about as close to hell as it gets.

And sad to say, I've been there.

expatinscotland · 22/07/2007 18:50

My folks are going to 'cat sit' my mum's sister cat in West Palm in Florida 1 August.

But they're from Houston and know better than to go outside except from air-conditioned car to air-conditioned building or house.

oooggs · 22/07/2007 18:51

I wouldn't go to any part of Florida in August, too hot, too busy & too humid. But the Everglades worst than the other parts

expatinscotland · 22/07/2007 18:53

True, oogs, because it gets NO breeze off the gulf or the ocean.

I grew up in Houston, which is just as bad, and NO ONE goes outside for any length of time except early in the morning or after about 7.

Then those damn mosquitos come out and make your life an even greater misery.

They suck.

The whole place sucks.

twinsetandpearls · 22/07/2007 18:53

will avoid the everglades which is what I hoped for !

But I can't do much about florida as I ahve a family that want to go to disney and we cannot go at any other time of year.

I have been to florida many time before but always earlier in the year.

I'm from FL, and people living in FL still live in FL in August too. It will be very hot and very humid in August, but go ahead and enjoy your holiday as you have booked it. Start out early, and take a siesta/swim in the afternoon, and then do something later in the day.

However, totally agree with expatinscotland about the Everglades. As I said, I'm from FL, and we never went there except from Oct. - Feb. Expat..we always used to say Houston was even more unbearable than FL...it's usually selected as having 'most oppressive weather'...you know what you're talking about.

Also, is chance of hurricane, but they're usually a greater chance in Sept. ..whatever that's worth. It's raining here too so don't bother about the rain..you will WANT it to rain in August..probably won't all day, but you will do a 'raindance' for some to 'cool' the air off...actually this just makes even more humid.

Take lots of insect repellent..I mean lots. I guess if I were you, I'd go ahead and do the Everglades for ONE day early in the day and then get over to Naples and get in the A/C.

I don't think they even rent cars in America that don't have A/C, but make SURE you get one that does. You will be sweaty and feel 'icky' but will be okay after a nice shower and A/C..well until you have to go out again...but use that bug stuff..if what you get doesn't work, buy another brand

expatinscotland · 25/07/2007 11:45

I do think I will name change soon, however!

twinsetandpearls · 25/07/2007 11:51

thanks I was being very touchy the other day - sorry.

I have been to Florida mnay times so know about the cars, I can also remember the relief of rain.

We are going as early in the holidays as we can to try and minimise the risk of hurricanes , as a teacher this is the only timeI could go to Florida.

Can you recommend an insect repellent, I can remember being told one was better than the other but I can't remember which one.

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 25/07/2007 11:52

Off! is a good insect repellant becuase you can get one with sunscreen built in.

twinsetandpearls · 25/07/2007 11:58

will look into that.

They all still want to go to the everglades, I have said we can drive down but they need to be prepared for the fact we may get there and then turn around and come back or go somewhere else. The Naples idea is a good one as we were going to go to Naples anyway.

The latest I have been to the glades is april and I didn;t get bitten then and I tend to get bitten very easily. But I apprecaite that August is a lot later.

Do you know if the tours would still be running during August? dd and dp want to go one one of the seminole tours and I have said we are not prebooking anything but we could drive down and play it by ear.

OP posts:
twinsetandpearls · 20/08/2007 23:47

we did not go deep into the everglades but did a tour in a consevation area just outside of Naples which was one of our holiday highlights, I did get bitten a lot though but the bugs left dd and dp alone.
