Where would you recommend for a low cost family holiday in June?

We normally holiday in the UK but have the opportunity to take a long weekend / week's break in June with a 13 yo and 8 yo.

Most of my previous overseas travels haven't involved the kids so I'm finding it tricky to choose a destination!

Any recommendations on warm-ish, low-cost destinations with beaches, history/culture and outdoor activities? Ideally not an inclusive resort type place as we'd like to get out and about, but somewhere with other children around too.

Re-reading this I'm realising what a tall order this is, but you never know, hopefully someone has some gems they are happy to share!

Many thanks.

We're going to Malaga in June. It seems to tick your boxes with history, culture, beaches and outdoor activities. It's also pretty cheap!

One to check out! Have you been before?

The Murcia region in Spain. We stayed near Mar Menor. We did Airbnb in a golf resort. Like you we were reluctant to do all-inclusive. They are handy when the kids are young but I don't like being cooped up in the one place for too long. My husband organised it as a surprise. I thought I would hate every minute of it (we don't play golf!) but it was actually one of the best breaks we've had. Very secure property, great pools, various cafes/restaurants, tennis courts, supermarket, etc on site.
We had a car whilst we were there. We visited Cartagena. There are some lovely areas to eat/drink at the marina/harbour. You can also do boat trips around the bay. Kids went go-karting near San Javier. Drove to Torrevieja to one of the waterparks. Lots of water sports available around Mar Menor - sailing, wind-surfing, etc. Visited Los Alcazares for the beach.

No we haven't been before but I've been reading up on it for a few months and it sounds great!

The Chania area of Crete sounds ideal, depending on flight prices.

Split/Barcelona/Nice - all tick the box! Split is just the right size for a long weekend (if you have a week I’d look at taking a ferry to one of the islands or doing an excursion or 2). It’s got a lively, safe vibe with a good deal of history and culture. There’s a number of nice beaches within walking distance - they are pebble beaches but incline gently into the blue sea. If you walk far enough you can find your own small private little beach area. We rented an apartment 2 years ago off booking.com which was very cheap but you’ll find similar on Airbnb or HomeAway.
Nice is cheap to get too, takes 2 hours and is a great city to visit. They have spent millions refurbing it. The beaches are very attractive (although swimming at Villefranche, a 10 minute train ride away is safer and better), the old town is very pretty & walking along the promenade at sunset is lovely. There are loads of art museums, good restaurants etc. It’s on a train line that runs along the coast so it’s easy to get to the likes of Cannes & Monaco. We rented an apartment (again booking.com) which didn’t cost a fortune.
Barcelona is another option - it’s got the culture, beaches & is cheap and easy to get too. Accomadation may cost you more though & I think they’ve clamped down on apartment renting.
With apologies to the PP (it’s just personal opinion) but Murcia isn’t one of my favourite regions in Spain. My parents used to live out there so we went frequently & I just think (based on a previous train journey around Spain trip) that it’s not one on the more attractive Spanish regions. Having said that, my folks loved it!

Excuse the typo’s!

Hi Rice Krispie - thanks for the recommendation, I'd heard good things about Pula and that site looks interesting!
