Any recommendations for Luxor?

We are heading to Cairo over October half term and are interested in doing a day trip to Luxor. We have 3 kids ages 6, 6, and 4, so we thought a day in a different (not so crowded!) place might be a nice change of pace. At the moment I’m looking at flying out early and coming back in quite late. Our hotel is quite near the airport so shouldn’t be too much trouble...

Wondering if anyone who has been to Luxor, especially with younger kids, can recommend what sights there are worth seeing and which ones we could give a miss? Obviously with just one day we can’t see everything, so we’d like to do the ones that are really worth it. The flight back leaves at like 11pm, so is it feasible to do a sunset felucca ride or maybe one of the temple light shows before heading back?

Tips appreciated!

Forgot to mention that we thought it might be wise to book a day use room somewhere like the Hilton or the Sofitel so the kids can have a swim and a rest over lunchtime in the midday sun. Good idea or unnecessary?

I would head to the Archaeological musem, the Temple of Karnak and and the Luxor Temple complex. We did a Nile Cruise so called in to see these important sights. We did the temple light show. It is quite good if you like an over-acted commentary full of sentances that make little sense. Its all a bit awe and wonder! However, it is worth doing but I am not sure what young children will get out of visiting Luxor. They must really like Egyptian history! You will be missing out on the Valley of the Kings by staying on one side of the Nile. Would I fly in just for felucca trip and a swimming pool? Probably not. Try and see the temples at least. The museum is modern and cool.

As for Luxor not being crowded in half term! Think again. It will be. (Be aware there are lots of leering men too and my teenage DD was not happy and nor was I).

Karnak Temple is amazing, we did it day and night but were a party of adults. Not sure I would do a day trip with 3 young DC.

Sorry for the delay, just getting round to checking the thread! We've decided to give Luxor a miss this time and do it in a few years as its own separate trip. I was entertaining it as our older two have a book they enjoy about the Valley of Queens and were saying they'd like to visit (they've been interested in Egypt generally ever since watching Prince of Egypt and have been asking to see the pyramids for a while now), but for now I think Cairo has more than enough to scratch that itch, and we'll do Luxor when they're older and we can see it properly. I think we'll all enjoy just taking in Cairo at our own pace over a few days this trip; it will be a lot more relaxing if we're not rushing to see everything all at once.
