New York Hotel recommendations?

We want to go to New York during the October half term. We are two adults with 14 and 12 yr old DC. Where can I find good deals including flights and hotels or are there any hotels or apartments that you recommend? We want to stay fairly close to Grand Central or the UN.
We would go for a week.

We have always found better deals with BA flights and adding in the hotel at the time of booking. Be flexible about flight times and you will find better value fares.

Unfortunately half term week is expensive. It is when lots of people want to travel. As I am not sure what your budget is, I am rather loathe to recommend anything. There are budget hotels which we do not use but there are plenty of excellent mid range options. You can plot the hotels on the map. I always consult booking.com before booking to check on price and reviews. It also helps narrow down what else is in the area. Some "hotels" are serviced appartments but Airbnb is not allowed so be careful about tis.

The UN at First Avenue is a really odd place to want to be. Its East side. It is not near much else so if you want to see the more famous sights, you will be spending time and money travelling within Manhattan. Grand Central Station is far more central and you can walk to more places.

Thanks Bubbles. A relative lives near the UN which is why we want to be close-by.
There are quite a few Airbnb apartments in New York. I think the issue was to do with how much time they were being rented out for and whether tax needed to be paid by the owner.

The issue is that short term let’s of under 30 days are illegal in the five boroughs. Many tenants have illegally sublet their apartment in direct contravention to the terms and conditions of their lease. New York has cracked down heavily on Airbnb and other such sites in recent years (as has Amsterdam and Barcelona).

Also many such apartments are small and apart from people actively being scammed via such sites, many residents got fed up with transient tourists coming in and leaving their apartment block all the time.

We have stayed at the Library Hotel which is about 2 minutes walk from Grand Central. It has been welcoming and comfortable, help yourself continental style breakfast and early evening cheese and wine included. Again, depends on your budget as you would need two rooms.

Affinia dumont I think it's called, certainly an Affinia Hotel, on Murray Hill. Huge room with separate living room and little kitchen. Amazing views overlooking the Chrysler building and not too far from the UN. Not flash or glitzy but perfect for us and Dteens x 2.

Also, we flew with Icelandair. Excellent airline and very well priced. We had 2days in Iceland on the way back. Also v short flight time on return - 4 hours from NY.

I loved the Viceroy Hotel

I've stayed on the Upper West Side twice and loved the area, it's well connected by the Subway has great shops and restaurants and quieter than Midtown. Last time we stayed at the Hotel Beacon in one of their 2 bedroom suites, it was huge, 2 bedrooms 2 bathrooms and a generous sitting room and kitchen. They also have 1 bedroom suites and all the rooms have kitchen facilities. There's also a communal laundry room.

We stayed at Row NYC, it was great. We got a fab hotel & flight deal on Expedia 👍

tillythedog · 17/05/2019 00:25

another one for the ROW NYC! literally 2 minutes from times square, mcdonald's and shake shack over the road, busses drop outside the hotel (tour busses such as red top), rooms were a tad small and dated but we only slept there!

Radio City Apartments! Brilliant location if you want to be by Times Square. Great to have some cooking facilities to keep costs down and when you just don’t want to eat out for every meal and also with teenagers you can get one and two bedroom apartments.

We were in NYC over Easter. The BA flight and hotel deals are often brilliant, so worth looking at. They did have a sale on last week, not sure if it's still going? Otherwise, I'd just see what Skyscanner is throwing up.

The first time we stayed in NYC, just DH and me, we stayed at the Amanda's 5th Ave, very near the library and Grand Central. Gorgeous hotel, but not big enough for a family.

We struggled to find a hotel for the 4 of us this Easter that wouldn't bankrupt us. Ended up in the Financial District (was cheaper because it was the long Easter weekend, so no one working down there). Hotel room was great, large enough for all of us, and we had a view of the Statue of Liberty- The Wagner Hotel.

The Library hotel is fantastic

maloofhoof · 22/05/2019 01:39

I stayed at the Westin Grand Central last year. Intend staying there for all future trips.

QuilliamCakespeare · 22/05/2019 01:48

We've been three times and found a flight and hotel package with Expedia is usually the best. Staybridge Suites is probably the most modern one we've stayed at. Hampton Inn was good too - really big rooms compared to average NY size. Both are close to the action of Times Square. Trying to remember the name of the 2nd hotel we used. It was nice but a bit further out and further down 5th Ave...

QuilliamCakespeare · 22/05/2019 01:50

Friends stayed at The Wellington Times Sq. very dated but also cheap and it's right next to the subway station. They said they'd definitely stay there again.

Tiredemma · 22/05/2019 02:00

Get a suite at the Redbury. About 10/15 min walk to grand central.

CoolShoeshine · 23/05/2019 18:17

I’d advise you to book ASAP! We booked last year for October half term and hotel prices seem to have steadily risen since then! (I keep looking as we are able to cancel our booking before the date of travel which I would do if I saw a better hotel at a good price but I don’t think that’s going to happen). Most of the cheaper end hotels are at least £600 more now than last December.
