Caribbean/Gulf of Mexico holidays in hurricane season?

We’re visiting my family in the states for 2 months next summer and DH and I want to take advantage of the time away to do something special together. However, it seems late summer/early sept is peak hurricane season.

Presumably it’s a bad idea to book a holiday in the region at that time? Or is it mostly likely we’d be just fine and still have lovely weather? Hawaii is the other option I suppose but would rather not deal with the long flight and jet lag.

I would not travel to that area of Mexico at that time.

Whereabouts in the US are your family?. You mention Hawaii, are they based on the West Coast?.

(The island of Oahu is about 6 hours flight time from the West coast US mainland and there is a time difference of three hours. If travelling from the UK this would involve two flights and you would need to stopover on the West Coast overnight).

It’s likely that you’d be fine but there is a genuine risk you wouldn’t. On that basis, is it worth it?
