Freiburg - any accommodation advice - Old Town?

Hi,

A friend and I will be staying in Freibug after visiting Switzerland and I was wondering where a good place to stay will be. We won't have a car so I assumed centrally. Is the Old Town the best place to stay? I have never been before so clueless. Was trying to find an Air BnB as might be easier, I am too old for room sharing.

Thanks
PP

PS - Any recommendations for good things to do (as in not to miss).

Can't recommend anywhere to stay but it is an amazing city, really pretty, lovely to walk or cycle around and just enjoy the atmosphere. You could also walk up the Lorettoberg (and maybe swim in the open air pool nearby) or get the bus and cable car up the Schauinsland mountain. There's also the Schlossberg with its own cable car.

If you get bored you could get the train along the "Hollentalbahn" (Hells Valley railway) and visit one of the lakes along it, or Titisee which is stereotypical Black Forest cuckoo clock land.

In terms of accommodation close to the Old Town is good but it's not a massive city and most places will be walkable or you can cycle or get the tram. Wiehre is a nice area (and good for the Lorettobad/berg and Schauinsland as well as town).

Lack of a car needn't limit you as tourists get free access to buses/trains.

I stayed near Horben and was able to use bus/tram into Freiburg easily.

You need to stay outside Freiburg to get free public transport, as the city does not take part in the free travel card scheme.

I looked at accommodation in the city and it was expensive, so decided to stay in an Airbnb apartment which was 15 minutes away by (free) train. Can look up the place I stayed at if you want?

This is where I stayed, they have a few apartments in a big house, 5 minutes walk from the station. Click on the hosts name to see all her listings : abnb.me/2NytSYHaVW

No local grocery shop though so stock up in Freiburg if self catering, the train stop before/after this one, nearest to Freiburg has an Aldi though so you could use that (1 stop by train) or look for accommodation there as it's a bigger place and you would still get the Konus card for free travel throughout the Black Forest.

I was rather underwhelmed by Lake Titisee though, very touristy and not that scenic compared to other places, plus you cannot walk around the lake all the way and so have to walk along the main road, so gave up on that idea as did others trying to do the same thing.
