Lisbon is supposed to be lovely it’s on my wish list.

What’s the budget, how many hours do you want to fly & how hot do you want it to be?! Lisbon is nice & I had a good time there but (and it’s just personal opinion) didn’t wow me enough to make an effort to go back. If all options are on the table, for a couple of days i’d do:
Prague, its just incredibly pretty!
Istanbul - the flight time is long but it’s got so much of interest & the foods great!
Rome or Verona or Syracuse (Sicily). Rome does wow, been 5 times and it never bores. Verona is a great short break city, has its own airport, short flight time, doesn’t have the crowds of Venice & the towns on Lake Garda are a bus ride away. Syracuse is beautiful- fly into Catania & take a train town. It’s exceptionally pretty & has a lot of history.
Stockholm - very attractive, fewer tourists but very expensive!
Carcasonne - has its own airport, walled medieval citadel & is a lovely romantic break!

I've just booked Nice. Short flight times and cheap. We're staying close to the train station as there's a train you can get along the coast with stops at Cannes, St Tropez, Antibes, Monaco....

Malaga. It's more relaxed than Barcelona and has a mini-Alhambra.

I'd go to Munich, potter round the Englische Garten and drink beer.

Rome is amazing but busy.

MenstruatorExtraordinaire good choice! Nice is great, easy to get to & really attractive. Hope it's ok to ask but are you booked to stay in the train station area? It's a bit rough immediately around the station (not dangerous but a bit run down & grotty) which is why the hotels here are cheaper. The train along the coast is just beautiful - it's really popular though so getting earlier trains & getting early onto the platform helps! The trains are double deckers which my DD got really excited about!

SJane48S thank you. We've only just booked the flights and were pondering apartments. Where would you recommend I look to be in a decent area please? We are 2 women so need to be safe coming back at night.

We would like a balcony if possible and a bed plus sofa bed so we don't have to share a double bed.

That's useful to know about the train. I fancy going to Villeneuve sur Mer to check out a bar I've been following on New Life in the Sun.

Agree re Lisbon, lovely city but wasn't wowed - we stayed about 10min walk to the city, lovely 5 star with pool etc. I was pregnant so was nice to have a hotel to relax in too! Usually we would stay more central. Another vote for Rome, or you could try Bratislava for somewhere smaller, easy day trip to Vienna or somewhere busier like Barcelona. Enjoy!

SJane48S · 09/05/2019 08:46

MenstruatorExtraordinaire the links take me to an app page so sorry, can't view! The old town is really full of character & would be the ideal spot but it is a schlep to the station from there (although I think there is a tram). Last time we stayed, we did what you are doing & stayed in an apartment ten minutes up from the Promenade des Anglais and 15 minutes down from the station. Air BnB show you an area map of that helps. Place Massena is also really nice. I don't know Villeneuve but Villefranche sur Mer has a good beach & really attractive old town with lots of restaurants. Old Nice also has lots of bar & restaurant options & is really lively at night! I'm going back with 2 old friends next year to celebrate us all hitting a big milestone birthday - really looking forward to it. Have a great time!

Go to somewhere like Frome, Rye or Painswick. Much more relaxing not to fly and kinder to the environment.

SJane48S · 09/05/2019 08:53

Although a long drive isn't particularly relaxing either or environmentally friendly unless the OP happens to have an electric car!
