I have a child free week in July. I have a tight budget and I've done a lot of the capitals in Europe. I'm looking for somewhere a bit unusual that isn't massively expensive. Any ideas for places you've been that you've loved?

Slovenia is lovely. Very beautiful, small so easy to get about. Pretty capital, Lake Bled is gorgeous, and you can swim in it. Easy, relaxing place. And pretty inexpensive as Europe goes.

Malta.

Not sure if they still do a real bargain bus ticket which makes getting about dirt cheap. It's not that far to anywhere anyway; even getting to the islands is quite straightforward, and there are all sorts of boat trips from huge 18-30 type ones to six people in a boat with a fisherman.

Plenty of good cheap food (esp the little pies from the bakeries, the seafood and the ice-cream), some really good museums in Valletta, and several wonderful prehistoric temples if you're into that sort of thing.

We've been several times and I'd go again. Steer clear of the big tourist resorts - stay in Valletta itself, or Mdina.

Both places appeal massively! Thank you. I've done Slovakia and fancied Slovenia, and I looked at cheap flights to Malta last year but couldn't get the dates! Thanks folks. Anyone else?

I would agree with Slovenia, beautiful country and a lovely capital city, Ljubljana, that feels more like a town. I went in winter, but I think it would be great in summer, greener obviously and outdoor eating and drinking (although the locals were eating and drinking outdoors in late November!).

Porto is another great city and not expensive compared to most of Western Europe. Portuguese people were very friendly to me as a solo traveler.

Go to Romania :) Fly into Cluj or Sighisoara. Do you like mountains, pretty medieval towns, street cafe culture, walks in the mountains etc? It’s amazingly beautiful, the people are hospitable and it’s relatively cheap. Give it a try.

I loved Nerja, fly into Malaga and hire a car. You could do Grenada too 3 days then 4 in Nerja

I'm actually making notes on my phone about these places! I also fancy Finland but I can't get flights.

I found Malta very limited in bad weather - would be difficult to entertain yourself. Also the cruise ships kind of ruin it.

I adore Lake Bled and you can combine ugh Ljuljbjana.
