does anyone know Romania?

We're thinking of flying to Bucharest, then travelling to Transylvania by train. Maybe hiring a car at some point.
We would be there for 3 weeks from 9th June.
Can anyone give some advice please? This is a fairly snap decision, and it would be good to hear from someone who's been there

Advice on what exactly? Your plan sounds perfectly do-able.

I can advise you that Romania isn’t long haul Wink

I went years ago to Timisoara. Was lovely - quite cosmopolitan atmosphere, cafes by the river, amazing fairytale church. We took a train out to stay a night or two somewhere in the hills nearby (oravitza?) and went walking. It reminded me a bit of Tuscany. It is quite near the Hungarian border if you fancy Budapest.
Sorry this is not much help with specifics but generally I would recommend Romania as a holiday destination! The hairy bikers did an episode there if you can find on YouTube or something. Also the book burying the typewriter is fascinating.

We went a few years ago and were blown away by how gorgeous it was. Flew in and out of Bucharest, and used bus/train to travel around, visiting Constanza (on the coast for a few days of beach), Brasov, Sinaia, Sigasoara and Sibiu.
Very cheap and easy to travel round. We’d love to go back and do more places in the east in future.

Did you plan in advance callie? We usually don't and we're thinking of having a day or 2 in Bucharest and then seeing how the mood took us.
Can one get by with English?

Everybody speaks English :)
Have fun, it’s a great country!

Gone, we did plan in advance but I reckon you could wing it without any problems, provided you didn’t want to stay on the coast around constanza (accommodation booked up v quickly).
English is widely spoken, we had no issues at all.
Brasov and sigasoara were my favourites so I’d def recommend those, sinaia was lovely too. Transylvania is gorgeous, amazing scenery. We visited an old Saxon fortified village that was lovely, I’ll try to remember the name.

Thank you. Any advice gratefully recieved

Have gone back through my old photos and am reminded how beautiful it all was. The Saxon village was called Viscri and we called in on the way back from bram castle, we also took a trip to another fortified village called Prejmer.

Spent about a month in Romania about 15 years ago when I was backpacking (ugh- too young to feel so old!)

Brasov, Timisoara, Sighishoara, Bucharest are all fab. I ended up in Cluj Napoca for a bizarrely long time, because I fell in with with a mad wonderful hostel group and we decided to stay and get pissed with them
for days.
The countryside is fairytale (saw wolves in the wild in the mountains! And the castles were just out of this world) and the city was semi dystopian/ semi faded French grandeur. Which I loved.

People are brilliant- super helpful, friendly, proud of their country and speak ALL the languages. Don’t remember it being hard to get around, or any hassle at all- which I would, if it had been.

You’ll love it- it’s magnificent.
