Recommendations for hotels in Florence

Dh has just told me he is taking me to Florence for my bday but wanted to tell me now so I could choose the hotel He is now in my very good books as you may imagine.

I would ideally like something fairly central, very comfortable with nice soft bed linen and big beds. Must have lots of character. Any suggestions? Nothing too big or flash or expensive either (not asking for much am I?!)

Try the Mona Lisa - we stayed there a couple of years ago - pretty decently priced and very quirky - our room was small but with super high ceilings. Also, a welcome jacuzzi in the bathroom. Great location and they were very friendly.

Try the Grand Hotel Villa Cora. It's 5*, and divine. Not in the center of Florence, but up in the hills - about 10 minutes drive. The hotel has a courtesy car that will take you to the center, and it is easy/inexpensive to get back to the hotel from town via taxi. There is a wonderful restaurant, beautiful garden, and a swimming pool surrounded by statues and cypress trees. Wonderful, and definitely a place for a special romantic weekend.
