Italy - to drive or not to drive

We're looking to holiday in Italy in October, more specifically in Sorrento.

Generally in Europe we book everything ourselves, hire a car at the airport and mostly self cater. However we've just returned from an AI holiday (adult only hotel) and loved it - not thinking about anything more than what cocktail to order next! We did get a bit fed up of eating in the hotel though despite the fact the food was amazing.

So, we're now in quandry what type of holiday to go for (yes, I know, 1st world problems!) and would love to hear what other people have done?

Noooo. Don't drive. I have been to Sorrento. The roads are narrow, twisty and turny, and the drivers are manic. Sorrento is on the Circumvesuviana railway line, and you can trains to Pompeii, Naples and Herculaneum.

Italy trains definetely! Book your travel in advance (its cheaper) on Trenitalia. There’s also buses that you can catch that run along the Amalfi coast to the main towns

Thanks for your replies; quite fancy travelling by train for a change - inter railing but with nice hotels rather than hostels Grin

You can get boats around the coast too!
