Location Recommendations for Self Catering Holiday

Hoping for some recommendations for someone where to go self catering in august with 2 DCs (7 and 5).

We've been AI before as it worked when the kids were small but we want to avoid the buffet this time and eat out. B&B would be perfect.

The places we've been before have been quite isolated (last year in Majorca the beach was disappointing too) and I am worried about booking SC somewhere like that as we want a wide choice of restaurants, especially for picky eater DD.

Looking at Algarve but I've never been before and it's hard to gauge how large the resorts are. Equally happy with Spain. Keen to have access to a nice beach too.

Family Life Coma Gran in Sa Coma on Majorca

Costs Adeje in Tenerife. We stayed at The Regency Torviscas Aparthotel which had the best self catering facilities I'd ever come across. It's up a very steep hill from the beach but they run a free mini bus there & back in the day & taxis up the hill are very cheap. We booked bed & breakfast through love holidays. The beach is beautiful with a huge choice of restaurants of you can eat in the hotel too.

Thank you.

@Ricekrispie22 is there plenty going on in Sa Coma? We went to Calla Bona last year and thought it was small and very quiet.

@funmummy48 sounds good. I've never been to Tenerife but know lots of people who rave about it. Is it roasting, roasting hot at the end of August when compared to Balearics or Portugal?

My suggestion would be Armarcao de Pera in the Algarve. We've been 4 times, twice all inclusive and twice self catering - about to go back for the 5th time next month! It's less touristy than Albufeira, has a lovely promenade town with restaurants and cafes, gorgeous beaches and lovely walks along the cliffs. We go in May normally, went in August once so I will say this - it's much busier in August, mainly seems to fill up with Portuguese holiday makers. We hired a car when self catering (so many sc places to choose from - let me know if you want specifics as to where we stay), and there are supermarkets you can easily get to for food etc.
It's a lovely resort, and not too far from other larger resorts and theme parks (Zoomarine is fabulous ), one of my favourite places Smile

Sorry that should be Armacao, notherwise sure where the extra r came from!

RaggieDolls · 22/04/2019 13:55

Thank you @hellswelshy. I'll check it out online later. If you've stayed somewhere with a large pool with a shallower and I'd love specifics of where you've stayed.

Used to busy. Go to Cornwall every May half term Grin

We have stayed in Quinta das Figueirinhas which has both 1 bedroom and 2 bedroom accommodation, both of which are very spacious. There are two pools, one at the end with the 2 bed apartments, and one near the one bed places. Both pools are deep but have an edge around the side for less able swimmers and one pool has a small shallow pool too for small children. Both have swings etc next to them, which my dd's love when they are cold and want to warm up in between swimming sessions Grin I can't praise the area enough, so if this resort doesn't suit there are plenty of sc apparent, whether you want a resort type feel or something more private.

@hellswelshy, that's where we're going this year. Really really reasonable for August! Which is the main reason I booked it. I'm glad you rate it.

hellswelshy · 22/04/2019 17:26

ithinkmycatisevil yes it's really reasonably priced, and for what you get space wise in the apartments, really amazing. I have seen lots of sc for double the price with much less spacious accommodation. The apartments are not overly 'modern' decor wise, but they are clean, well equipped and the resort is peaceful. Are you staying in a one bed or 2? We've stayed in both, the one bed in August when it was busier, and this was 2 years ago when they didn't have air con in the lounge where me and dh slept - was rather warm!! They have now upgraded these apparently and air con in both rooms.

It's a charming resort, not too in your face if you know what I mean, hope you enjoy it Smile

I think Costs Adeje will be pretty hot in August, we were there last Easter and it was in the high twenties then. Regenc y Torviscas didn't have air conditioning at the time but it was cool enough at night at that time of year. If you look on Trip Advisor there will be reviews from guests who were there in August.

Ithinkmycatisevil · 22/04/2019 17:40

We have a one bed, I looked at the two, but decided we could make do with one and save the money. The apartments do look massive, which is great.

RaggieDolls · 23/04/2019 07:01

Thank you @hellswelshy. They look ace which must be why they are fully booked for late August!!

Thanks @funmummy48. I usually tend to think 'once you're hot you're hot' and it doesn't bother me but will ponder a bit more on Canaries in August.

Hello Hellswelshy
Can you suggest some resorts or hotels in Portugal in armacao de Pera please?

Thanks very much!!

hellswelshy · 23/04/2019 10:51

Oh what a shame RaggieDolls ! They are popular with Portuguese holidaymakers in August, we normally book ahead, but as we normally go in May it's not nearly as busy. Have you tried their own site? I find if they are showing full on Booking.com they sometimes have availability if you book direct. Also there is a block of apartments right next to Quinta das Figueirinhas called Quinta da Torrejao which are always popular by the looks, though never stayed there.

Angrymouse I can recommend both hotels we stayed as all inclusive - Be Live Palmeiras - huge hotel with great facilities, and Vila Gale Nautico which was my favourite as not so busy as Be Live, wonderful food, and 2mins from the town. Self Catering we've only stayed in Quinta das Figueirinhas, but as mentioned above Quinta da Torrejao looks lovely, and there are so many sc places in the area you'll be spoilt for choice!

Angrymouse · 24/04/2019 13:10

Many thanks Hellswelshy!
I will take a look today
