Jet2 car rentals Spain

We've booked a villa, hire car included. I've only now belatedly read terrible reviews about extra costs and being ripped off. Has anyone any positive stories? The villa is 1.5km away from the town so theoretically we could do without, we'd just then have trudge about a lot plus then pay for transfers.

What costs do the hire company take upfront and what cards are accepted, visa and MasterCard debit or must it be credit?

No experience, but I expect that they will use a local agent. Any idea which one?

Is there any scope for not taking the car and either hiring your own, or just walking, using taxis or the bus? Even if they don't reduce the price, it could be worth it if the hire car really is a terrible deal from a terrible company like Goldcar, Record or Rhodium, who are just Goldcar in disguise.

If you decide to take the car, you will almost certainly need a credit card as they will want a large deposit - about 1000 euro. You can reduce this to zero, but it will cost about 100 euro a week. You can take out your own insurance in the UK - look on moneysavingexpert for about £10-20, but that means you will need to leave the credit card deposit.

If you're worried about potential excess get a policy with carhireexcess.com. Only costs a few quid and means you can't get stung at all (well you can but the policy will pay it)

We've only got debit cards would that do? It's annoying when villa holidays say free car rental without actually spelling out what that involves.

So if we take out extra insurance at home that's cheaper but we'd need to leave a large deposit. If we take their insurance of 100euro a week we don't leave a large deposit? It's 1.5km from the shop/beach etc so doable really, just means we can't leave the area and would probably have to fork out a small fortune for taxi transfers as it's 45 mins from airport.

You also need to check the fuel policy, many are full to empty which means you might be buying fuel, that you won't use.

I wouldn't rely on a debit card for foreign car rental. Almost all require credit cards. Can you sort out a credit card before you go?

Op, you need a credit card in the lead driver's name to hire a car unless you take out their extortionate excess insurance. I have annual car hire insurance for about £50, but it means leaving a deposit on a credit card (between £1000 - £1200), they won't accept a deposit from a debit card.

If its Goldcar you'd be better cancelling the car hire if you can and arranging with someone else. They tried to tell DH that our annual worldwide excess cover was not valid in Italy Hmmand operate a full to empty policy for fuel where you get charged an exorbitant rate for a tankful of fuel. This was after waiting 2.5 hrs in the queue to be served. In front of him a couple started crying because the hold Goldcar put on their credit card meant they would have no spending money.

We managed to avoid being gouged for any repairs but I'd think there was a very high chance of this happening.

Have you checked how much it would be to hire with a different company. We've had no problems with Hertz or Europcar as although more expensive initially, there are no hidden costs and seem to be more reputable.
