We are looking for 10 days on a beach in Greece, but with a couple of days in Athens first, so can anyone recommend an island/resort/whatever which is a reasonable ferry ride from Athens?

or any other thoughts on the best way of doing this?

thank you!

Poros is a lovely island and you can get a ferry there from Athens (think it’s abour 2-3 hours)

Evia is an island that is joined to the mainland by a bridge so you can drive or take the train. It's about 80km from Athens. It's beautiful and not too touristy, if you like your destinations unspoilt.

Train would be fun too, will look at both of those, thank you.

No an island, but have you looked at the Peloponnese?

We are going to Athens and then getting the overnight ferry to Crete in a few weeks time. Ferry at 9pm (can board from 7pm) and arrive at 6am. So longer than you want but pretty convenient.

Easy to fly home from Crete afterwards so it’s just one ferry journey.

We once enjoyed a stay in Stoupa on the Peloponnese, 3.5 hours drive from Athens before picking up a cruise.

Aegina is 40 minutes on the fast ferry from Athens port Piraeus and has holiday accommodation, sandy beaches, fishing ports etc. Hydra is about an hour and has no vehicles (donkey travel is available), pebble coves and a unique atmosphere when the cruise ship daytrippers have left.

Agistri

Angina can easily be reached within 40 minutes from Piraeus.

Spetses and Hyrda are both a short ferry away.

So many options! Fab, thank you everyone

Agistri is/was lovely, lots of Athenians come by ferry on a Friday evening and stay for the weekend, so weekends lively, in the week it's quiet. Or that's how it was when I last went, mind you, that was over thirty years ago!

Went to Hydra many years ago when I was a child, also stayed a few days in Athens. Remember it as a lovely island

Stoupa on the mainland is lovely.

Also the island of Andros is quite easy to reach from Athens
