How old are your dc?

Try Nuremberg instead, much cheaper and lovely, pretty warm in August too. There are mediveval walls etc as well.
Got everything Salzburg has on a smaller scale without the ££££
You can easily get a train to Zeppelin platz where Hitler held his rallies. It’s a very strange and eerie place, my dc’s minds were blown by standing on the same spot Hitler did on the videos. It doesnt glorify what happened at all and they haven’t restored it apart from to make sure it’s safe

I was going to say the Star Inn central but I see others have beaten me to it! Probably the only reasonably priced hotel in the entire city! Similar to an Ibis or Holiday Inn Express. It’s nice to be in the centre of things, such a lovely city. It may not be your thing but if it is you should watch the Sound of Music before you go, you can see lots of the locations in the city centre. Your dc’s might be interested in the story of the real Von Trapps and how they left Austria because of not wanting to join the Nazis. If your dc’s are little the Mirabelle Park has a nice playground.
