No, I don’t think Sunday to Friday is too long in August.
Firstly, everything takes longer because there are way more people around. Longer queues, busier streets and restaurants etc...
Secondly, there’s the beach! So you could do just half a day of sight seeing and then hit the beach in the afternoons.
Thirdly, the shopping in Barcelona is amazing. Even the least fashion conscious teen will want to spend a lot of time shopping! Tell them to start saving now!
Also, the Cafe culture and restaurants in Barcelona can be verrrry relaxed! When the Spanish are on holiday, they could easily take a couple of hours over lunch and another couple for tapas in the evening!
Lastly, it’s hot, so you’ll be going slower anyway and perhaps even seeking a sit down in the shade of a park.

We stayed in this hotel and really liked the location because it was within easy reach of the city centre and the beach but quite peaceful. www.booking.com/hotel/es/vinccimaritimo.en-gb.html
There are some really nice parks in the area surrounding the hotel. It’s a 10 or 15 min. ride on the metro from the city centre. It's near to the natural history museum.

We went to Barcelona for 4 days in October.
Honestly, I'd stay a little outside the city and go in for whatever touristy bits you want to see, Barcelona as a city centre I wasn't that impressed with - smelly, dirty, crowded and for God's sake avoid the restaurants with outside seating down the middle of Las Ramblas as they are a total rip off!

That said, the Magic fountains are exactly that (and more), Park Guell is lovely even taking into account the hoards of tourists, the beach was great (although I guess would be more crowded in August). If you fancied getting out of the city, Girona is 45 minutes by train and absolutely beautiful.

We stayed here coolrooms.com/malda/ in the Gothic Quarter. It had only been open a couple of week and our room was small but pretty much perfect and the staff were outstanding. It's also really central is you want to be in the city.
