50th Birthday weekend away

Please could anyone recommend a European destination for a weekend away for 8 friends to celebrate a 50th birthday in September.

Self catering ideally because there are 8 of us. We would probably like to do eating and drinking, a little bit of sight seeking and shopping.

Malta is fab. Not really much shopping but loads to see, great restaurants and bars, and very cheap flights.
