Hi Me & DH have 5 nights child free in June for his birthday. Any ideas where to go . We have done Barca,Rome, Venice, Buda, Istan, & Marrakech...so I'm thinking somewhere a little different? Dubrovnik has come to mind but have been warned it's full of cruise ship travellers, so Tallin & Krakow are also on my mind . Has anyone got any stand out places that maybe aren't automatically thought of ...or is Tallin or Krakow I good bet .....TIA

I have been to Dubrovnik, it was absolutely gorgeous and beautiful temperature. It didn't have any problems with cruise ship travellers. It was the best holiday I've ever been on, I would only go back there in the future x

Oh wow ...well maybe I should ignore the warnings . Dubrovnik certainly looks stunning ...thank you for the advice emma

Vienna
Geneva
Amsterdam
Copenhagen

That could of just been my experience. But in my honest opinion it was gorgeous, absolutely lovely.

Dubrovnik can be busy, it depends on what days you are likely to be there? (Weekends busier than weekdays - you can check the cruise ship schedule online to get an idea).

Tallinn is gorgeous but is a popular stag night destination in the summer. I would recommend going in winter when it’s quieter and it’s very pretty in the snow.

For other options how about Stockholm, Norweigan Fjords, Swiss Alps, Bavaria.... they would all be nice at that time of year.

Florence or Valencia?

Dillyson · 15/03/2019 16:58

Have a look at Palermo. We really liked it, Lisbon is good as well.

Have a look at Palermo. Oh God I would love to go there Dillyson Envy

Did you do any Montalbano sight seeing?

yearinyearout · 15/03/2019 17:48

I've said it before and I'll say it again...Porto! Lovely compact city, easy access from the airport into the city on the metro, lots of bodegas along the river to sit and sip a sherry/go on a tasting tour, loved it!

Lisbon, Seville, Valencia .... Dubrovnik is nice, but it is full of cruise ship passengers and it's small so 5 nights might be too much.

If you had 3 nights in Copenhagen (which is a good amount of time to see the main sites and it’s lovely), you could spend the extra 2 nights on a “mini-cruise” with DFDS up to Oslo. 2 nights on board the ship, with a day in Oslo in between. Breathtaking scenery sailing up and down the Oslo fjord, really wonderful buffet each night and certainly a bit different! We did a coach tour in Oslo that they sell on the ship - we were so tired from walking around Copenhagen - it was excellent. Went up to a ski jump, round the Vigeland sculpture park and the Viking ship museum. Very knowledgeable and engaging tour guide.
We did all this in February, in the snow, would love to do it in the summer.

Malaga makes for a super city break.

Also like Reus/Tarragona

Rovinj/ Pula - Croatia.

Utrecht

No Montalbano related activities as I've never seen it.
We went to Palermo in early October and the weather was brilliant. Its a good place for wandering, there's a Palace, a cathedral and markets. I'm sure you could easily get to a beach and the food was fab, except for the spleen sandwiches!

JiltedJohnsJulie · 16/03/2019 07:08

If you haven't seen Montalbano I can really recommend it. The books are really good too. The first one is The Shape of Water.

Stockholm is fab, if quite pricy. You could do day trips to nearby islands if you wanted a change from the city.

Or Moscow? Never been but had it recommended esp in June
