How far in advance do you start packing?

We are going on holiday to Torbay at the weekend and our hallway is already full of stuff that we will be taking. We have packed food and other kitchen stuff, beach gear, toys for the twins, picnic rug etc. On Wednesday I will pack the twins clothes and on Thursday, DH and I will pack our clothes.

Was wondering how soon others start getting their gear together for their holiday?

the day before usually

I can't bear packing so would rather get it all out of the way in one go

We go on Friday and all I've done is made 2 piles of clothes for dd and ds which they are not allowed to get dirty as I want to pack them on Thursday.
Thursday will be my worst day, dh isn't coming with us and he'll be coming with big pussy cat eyes with last minute washing and I'll have to leave him a cooked meal to last 2 or 3 days. The rest of the time he'll be on pizza and take aways.

In my case the day itself .

I wash everything and pack the night before and in the morning.

I have packing lists

We go on Thursday and I thought I'd better start, I dragged the suitcases out and realised I have no idea where the keys are. I phoned DP and he hasn't got the foggiest either.
So sat here on MN with a box of chocs

I feel like a geek.

Oh, I would say at least an hour before we leave - avoids massive overpacking

It is a bit early, Speedymumma. During the week, I will make sure the clothes that we want to take are washed and ironed. Plan things. Go and buy sun cream etc. But the packing itself ? Not till the day before.
Watch you don't fall over that rubber ring

I start chucking things in bags a week or so before, mainly so the kids won't wear the clothes I want to take.
Then I get it all out the night before, try to talk myself into taking less.
BTW speedymama, just to make you feel less geeky.... I have a holiday checklist on the computer which I use as a basis every year (just updating for this year's holiday at the mo) Is that really sad or just sensible???

speedymama · 09/07/2007 11:31

We booked the holiday in November 2006 and made our list then and have been regularly updating it.

We're leaving on Thursday at 3 am.

I'm beginning to think about packing

queenofcontradictionelizabeth · 09/07/2007 11:43

usually the day before

Normally start weeks in advance. Suitcases/bags are in my bedroom. I chuck bits in as and when i come across them and to stop the DC wearing some of the clothes. I work off a list, that gets crossed through when the stuff hits the case. TBH, the last holiday we went on i wasn't so excited about it. so I left the packing until the night before. I really noticed a change in stress levels/how calm i was when we arrived. So I will probably stick with the list next hol, but will chuck it all in the night before.
