Has anybody been to Colombo? I am looking for recommendations for a great, but not too expensive, hotel …. and family things to do.

Can’t help with the hotel as we were backpacking and stayed somewhere v basic! Look at the area near Galle Face Green / Dutch Hospital / the Station though, that’s a good central location.

How long will you be in Colombo for? There’s not a huge amount to do and it’s a big bustly city, but you could do daytrips to other places. Personally I wouldn’t recommend more than a day or two there, then move on somewhere else.

Would recommend a tuktuk safari (www.tuktuksafarisrilanka.com) - they take you round the main sites, you get a funny informative local guide and it’s a good way to travel.
Galle Face Green is good for people watching during the day, and street food at night. The old Dutch Hospital has some lovely restaurants for dinner. Galle Fort is an easy train journey away.

Galle face, charming and right on the Galle face green, has pool and giant outdoor chess board.

Not been yet (going next month) but we’re staying at the Cinnamon Red in Colombi - has decent reviews on TripAdvisor for location & quality. Didn’t cost the earth either!

A couple of nights there is plenty. There isn't a whole lot to do in Colombo.
