Absence from school fines

Hi. Daughter is in yr 8 and has gone on holiday with her dad and Nan for 10 days. Will I be fined £60 per day? Help. Worried about how much this fine will be?

Don't think its per day. Is it not per parent?

SavoyCabbage · 10/03/2019 21:01

www.gov.uk/education-attendance-council

It's £60 per week per parent in my area. Get your ex to pay it all if that happens.

maryw1982 · 10/03/2019 21:01

So a family friend has requested 8 days off in May for her son and says she’s got a £480 bill. Which I’ve not seen and I just can’t believe that it can be £60 per day. I’d have a £540 bill and that’s just for one parent. God I’m so worried. Ha. I must stop stressing until I get some further info

Bit late to worry now if she’s already gone on holiday. Confused

PotteringAlong · 10/03/2019 21:04

In my area it’s £60 per parent per day

maryw1982 · 10/03/2019 21:05

Haha. This is true! If it is £60 per day I’ll say she got poorly and never went 🤷🏻‍♀️

So her dad will also be fined.

maryw1982 · 10/03/2019 21:06

My council site says ‘A £60 penalty notice fine may be issued to each parent or carer for each child, to be paid within 21 days’

Your friend is lying is £60 per absence per parent. If you are seperated you won’t have to pay unless you consented in writing.

2cats2many · 10/03/2019 21:07

I would find it highly surprising if your friend has been fined for an absence that she hasn't taken yet.

Janleverton · 10/03/2019 21:07

I understood that it was per day? Or per session?

10 day term time holiday is quite a significant absence in secondary school. My dd would be having kittens about all the catching up to do - their school requires pupils to approach teachers of missed classes (I.e. dentist appts/sickness/school trips) to get details of homeworks due, and then have to provide a timeline for them making up the work.

RomaineCalm · 10/03/2019 21:07

I'm sorry but the concept of LAs imposing fines for term-time holidays isn't new news.

It's too late now to worry, I would prepare for worst-case scenario and accept that's the cost of taking children out of school to go on holiday.

maryw1982 · 10/03/2019 21:08

I thought this too. She requested 8 days off in May. My daughter has been gone for three days and still no sign of fine

OP posts:
maryw1982 · 10/03/2019 21:09

It’s not new news no. I’ve never taken my kids out of school before and this is all new to me. Won’t be happening again :/

It takes months for fines to be issued. One school mum took her child out for a week in December and didn't get a fine until March!

MyDcAreMarvel · 10/03/2019 21:09

I understood that it was per day? Or per session?
No it’s just a myth /rumour.

maryw1982 · 10/03/2019 21:09

Yeah per absense aounds like per session, which would mean the bill would be even higher. Just wrote this thread to see if anyone had been fined and amounts..

Can someone please tell me the name of a council that fines £60 per day please?

cordeliavorkosigan · 10/03/2019 21:10

In the borough we were in, fines, and the education welfare officer, did not apparently get involved if attendance was above 85 percent.

cordeliavorkosigan · 10/03/2019 21:11

And fines definitely would not have happened for a planned absence that hadn't yet occurred!

MyDcAreMarvel · 10/03/2019 21:11

No per period of abcsence . So you talk
A child on holiday in March for a week - one fine of £60 per parent.
Another holiday for two weeks in June - one fine of £60 per parent.

maryw1982 · 10/03/2019 21:12

It couldn’t have happened at a worse time either. She’s just choosing her options. Luckily she’s in top sets and knows what she wants to do. Hope she doesn’t fall behind. School teachers all seemed supportive in helping her catch up. Just policy now to issue these damn fines

OP posts:
JRMisOdious · 10/03/2019 21:12

Didn’t you, or her dad, talk to School before she went?

maryw1982 · 10/03/2019 21:13

Oh that’s interesting. Her attendance has always been100%. First holiday she’s been on in term time
