Has anyone ever got a good last minute holiday deal during the summer holidays?

We weren't going to go abroad this summer but have now decided sod it, and that if we can get a good deal we'll go somewhere!

Normally we book our flights and accommodation independently but obviously all the more reasonably priced, better located accommodation has gone.

We were thinking about a last minute deal but do they still exist ? (DP and I booked one like this pre-kids, nearly 25 years ago so things might have changed!)
Have you ever got one and, if so, what was it like? Was it a bargain?

No never in 40 years of booking holidays abroad have I ever got a genuine good last minute deal in the summer holidays.
If you wait until just before you want to travel you will find something, it won't be what you would have chosen, the flights will probably be crap and it won't be discounted.
It's supply and demand. Holiday companies can usually sell holidays in the school summer break quite easily so they have no reason to discount. June and September is different, less demand so prices more competitive.

Every year you hear reasons why they'll be discounted last minute holidays - this year of course people are saying because of the uncertainty around Brexit people are scared to travel/want to wait until things have settled which means lots of unsold package deals.

Other years they blame recessions, good weather in the UK, exchange rate etc etc but I'm yet to hear of anyone who has managed to get something in the school holidays.

The reason that things are flogged off at the last minute is because those holidays have so far failed to sell and the tour operator is looking to get something for them, because it's better than nothing. So what will be heavily discounted then is available right now and if you can't see anything you like the look of now then you probably won't then either. In your position I think I'd do what the first PP said and look outside your normal range of holidays. Duinrell, Eurocamp, Beekse Bergen, Siblu, Efteling - something you can drive to in Europe - and see if you can get a reasonably priced week there. Even the Centre Parcs in Europe are cheaper than the British ones. I just booked Eurotunnel last week for a week in Aug and for our car and four passengers it was £170 return and from there you can easily drive to lots of really nice places, if going abroad is what you all want.

I wanted to go to Turkey to meet with a friend. Holidays got very cheap ( £209 per person) on the usual websites Tui etc but only flights went from Aberdeen.
It cost £100 in petrol or flights to get to Abetdeen from me...,,

easyJet holidays always seem to be a lot cheaper than your biggies. When I was looking for last minute a couple of summers ago, it was a choice of Turkey or Turkey.
