We are looking at booking a trip to Malaysia this Christmas time which will include 3 nights in KL, 3 nights in Penang and then a week on a beach in Langkawi.

I've seen on here that the Danna hotel is highly recommended but out of our price range I think! Has anyone stayed at the Westin Langkawi hotel and would you recommend it, is the beach nice? If not then are there any other recommendations? Thanks in advance!

We stayed at tanjung rhu it was lovely but was before we had kids. Only 1 family in the hotel did have kids.

Thanks for the recommendation I'll have a look. We don't have younger kids anymore ... youngest is 14 so don't need kids clubs etc.

My parents go to the Casa del Mar most years and love it. But they also love the Danna, so Casa might be out of your price range too.

Just had a look at the Casa Del Mar but didn't get as far as prices as it's fully booked on the dates we are looking at ... obviously popular. Thanks though

Went to Langkawi with the kids at Christmas time 4 yrs ago. We stayed at the Andaman resort (part of Starwood hotel group so we also earned points). Our DCs were 7 and 5 and they loved the free early morning jungle walk and free reef pool feeding experience (late afternoon), as well as hiring a canoe and being rowed by their dad to the private island just offshore the hotel’s beach (the resort next door is the swanky The Datai so the shared beach was really nice). Very family friendly and food very nice. Hotel also offered free shuttle bus to downtown. Bus stop was a 5 min walk from a shopping mall containing a McDonalds, clean toilets, a big supermarket with good selection of Western groceries/ snacks, and lots of stalls selling discounted duty-free chocolate! And the island’s main mosque (clean toilets, good ladies prayer area).

Our previous visit to Langkawi was as a young-couple-on-a-budget and we stayed at the Sheraton Tanjung Rhu.

I like Casa del Mar so not very helpful for you OP. I had an amazing facial in their spa actually. The spa isn't fancy but my skin looked fantastic for days afterwards.

I've also stayed at Ambong Ambong but that's self-catering apartments/houses in the jungle, although only 5 mins walk to the beach. Loved it there!

A friend stayed at the Andaman recently and really liked it (and he's quite picky).

Watch out for the mozzies. They're pretty rife on Langkawi due to all the standing water in the roadside drainage system. Never had a problem with them in KL or Penang, just Langkawi seems to be the mosquito residence of choice. Wink
