Stansted Express ticket

I have printed a ticket for the Stansted Express, which has a scanning area on it. Do you have to scan this at the station somewhere before getting on the train or to get through a barrier, or just present it to the ticket inspector on the train?

For the train leaving the airport - there's a ticket man to show it to who directs you to the correct train platform. I think it was also checked on the train.

For coming back, it probably depends on the station you are travelling to, I am pretty sure I scanned it in Tottenham Hale.

I think you also have to scan it when you get off the train - definitely do at Liverpool Street otherwise you can't get through the barriers.
