Airport run...taxi or parking?

DumbledoresArmy · 18/02/2019 09:48

Do you get a taxi to the airport or pay for parking?

We've always payed for parking & driven to the airport however this year due to prices going up etc I'm considering taxi.

Taking into account fuel etc they work out around the same price this year.

Concerns are v. Early morning flight worried that taxi won't show!!

But equally like idea of being dropped at doors.

With driving & parking we can be a little more flexible & stop for coffee on the way also not worry about taxi letting us down.

But is it a no brainer of taxi if same price??

For me personally I like to take my car, just because I like to know I can get there and get back with no problem. I agree though the prices have really gone up!

CandyFlossLegend · 18/02/2019 10:03

Before Dc, my Dad drove us and collected us. With DC, We park at airport. Some hotels nearby do a stay, fly and park.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 18/02/2019 10:06

We always get a taxi. There’s a firm that specialise in airport runs near us so no worries they won’t show. BUT we live about two and a half hours from Heathrow and are usually flying long haul so it is well worth it to not have added stress and fatigue from having to drive ourselves there and back.

Oddsocksandmeatballs · 18/02/2019 10:14

Usually do stay, park, fly at an airport hotel.

IWouldPreferNotTo · 18/02/2019 10:19

I prefer taxi to driving especially for long haul because of the return journey. Having someone meet you at arrivals and having the car very close and then sleeping through the journey home makes the end stage easier.

I know the taxi could be late (but that's really rare) but your car could also break down which is an even bigger problem.

I would prefer to take my car but a big thing for us is not leaving the keys with anyone

WhatHaveIFound · 18/02/2019 10:29

I always take a taxi to my local airport as the parking is so expensive. I've never had a taxi be more than 10 minutes late and i always leave plenty of time so it's not been an issue.

I always drive to my second closest airport airport as the taxi would be £60/70 each way so it (parking is cheaper than this, even for 2 weeks). Technically we could use public transport but on family holidays it's way more that the cost of the parking. DH sometimes uses public transport when he's travelling by himself for business.

PestoSnowissimos · 18/02/2019 10:40

Taxi here too. Prefer to leave my car safe at home. I was especially grateful that I did this when I broke my knee skiing a couple of years ago & I woudn’t have been able to drive myself home!

SooticaTheWitchesCat · 18/02/2019 13:25

We always get a taxi but we only have a small car so we can't fit everything in.

Mmmmbrekkie · 18/02/2019 13:26

Short term valet official Gatwick parking

It’s utterly wonderful.

Knittedfairies · 18/02/2019 13:28

We've always had one way car hire; no waiting for a taxi to arrive, and most companies have a shuttle service to the terminal.

BikeRunSki · 18/02/2019 13:29

Parking. What happens to your taxi if your return flight is delayed?

Longdistance · 18/02/2019 13:30

Which airport?

PestoSnowissimos · 18/02/2019 13:43

BikeRunSki, my taxi company check the ETA of the flight & don’t aim to be there until 30mins after landing. My previous taxi company did the same.

weegiemum · 18/02/2019 13:46

We taxi, but we're only 25 mins from Glasgow Airport so it's a no-brainier. Parking for 2 weeks is way more expensive than the £20 taxi fare.

BarbaraofSevillle · 18/02/2019 14:41

We always drive. We're about half an hour from Leeds Bradford airport and I think that taxi and parking is about the same. Taxi might even be more expensive TBH and driving in just seems easier. We used a transfer company once and they insisted on picking us up far too early, kept us hanging around for ages after the return flight, and took us home by an utterly stupid route that took ages. I did ask the driver if he knew where he was going.

I just look for the best deal on parking I can find on the internet. We never go for more than 7/8 days so don't need to pay for a fortnight and can usually get a week's parking for £35-40 using one of the two companies on the outskirts of the airport that bus you in.

We often use Manchester too, parking is a little more expensive (£40-50 but we usually use the official meet and greet, so I trust them completely with the keys to the car and all we have to do to get to the terminal is walk across the road.

OrchidInTheSun · 18/02/2019 15:09

Drive, valet park. I hate being driven by someone I don't know or trust. We live a couple of hours from our nearest airport

DumbledoresArmy · 18/02/2019 16:05

It's Birmingham airport.
We live about an hour drive away.

If you have an amazing taxi firm, they will watch the departures board, realise shit has hit fan, and come and collect you from the airport after your 23hr delay. The only communication I had was a quick "we're delayed" with a response of "dont worry, we'll be there".

But, that was in my UK days. Now I'm stuck with useless drivers who are often late, but since the airport hasnt enough parking, and charge by the hour, unless we are going for a weekend, we taxi it with plenty of time to spare, and hope they come back at the other end!

girlywhirly · 20/02/2019 09:37

We like to fly from Luton which is most local to us, and get a taxi there as it’s cheaper than parking. Upon return we go to the taxi office and they put out a call to the taxi’s waiting, see who wants the fare and agree the price upfront, then you are shown to your taxi. Very straightforward and efficient, and you know there will be a taxi available. We had a nightmare with pre booking a return taxi once, our flight was late, three other flights landed in quick succession and the passport control was at a standstill. I had the driver calling me constantly asking where were we?

However, on an upcoming holiday this year Tui suddenly announced a change of flight so now we will have to fly from Stansted and drive. Not only is the parking more expensive (as the delay notifying the change meant we could not book far in advance to get a cheap deal) but we will be paying for petrol as well. The only saving grace is that we will be driving there early hours on a Sunday, so no commuter traffic, and returning on a Sunday late afternoon.

ASauvignonADay · 20/02/2019 09:40

We park at one of the cheaper car parks near the airport that then bus you to the terminal. Much cheaper than taxi or airport car park.

sandgrown · 20/02/2019 09:43

We travel from Manchester and use APH parking. They store your car and drive you in by bus. A very efficient set up and never had any issues with our car. They are reasonably priced and have lots of offers on the internet. My daughter booked a meet and greet through Groupon and they never showed up. She had to get last minute expensive parking and nearly missed her check in.

shecamefromgreece · 20/02/2019 09:45

Taxi but I'm ten mins from an airport.
Just jump in a black cab home but book a minivan to take us.
