Which resort on the Costa del Sol?

We’re a family of two adults and two teens , flying into Malaga in late August.

I’m trying to choose which resort to stay in for a self catering holiday. I like the look of Nerja, but my DCs would like to visit Gibraltar, so I’m wondering whether to stay to the South West of Malaga.

We don’t want a big resort such as Torremolinos, but would like somewhere small and pretty on the coast, with a Spanish feel, and a few restaurants and bars to wander to in the evening.

Given that we often holiday on the quiet island of Menorca, does anyone have any recommendations for a small resort that may suit us?

Many thanks

Nerja sounds just what you'e looking for tbh. We had a lovely holiday there.

We were self catering in a private block of apartments with beautiful grounds and a pool. Tapas bars galore, cobbled streets, restaurants ...

This has made me want to go again!

Guardsman18. That sounds lovely, exactly I’m looking for, and I’m hoping there’s a resort with a similar feel further down the coast

I went to Nerja a long time ago, it was lovely.

DonPablo · 16/02/2019 10:33

I came on to say Nerja! We used to go a lot in my teenage years and we took the dc last summer for a holiday and we loved it. It was a fairly gentle holiday, just mooching around on the beach in the day, an after lunch siesta and back out in the town for dinner and a ride on the land train, an ice cream on the Blacon and listening to the live music and playing with the toys that the hawkers sell. Back in the apartment for midnight. And repeat!

Off the coast - Arroyo De La Miel, a working Spanish village or Benalmadena Pueblo which is up in the hills. Arroyo is on the train line out of Malaga airport.

Right along, the other side of Gibralter is San Lucca de Barrameda. About a two and half hour drive from Malaga. Beautiful town, coastal, main squares with tapas bars, very Spanish.

Are your flights booked? Two hours west from Malaga is lovely Chiclana de la Frontera (where Sevillian’s and Madridian’s have holiday homes). Very Spanish, great base for days out to Pueblos Blancos, Cadiz, Gib, Barbate ruins etc. Can fly into Gib, Seville or Jerez for closer journeys than Malaga. The beaches are incredible - endless stretches for dune-backed golden sand.

Nerja sounds just what I want as well. DC in their 20s now but are coming away with us for a week in the summer. Is there much to do at night? They don't want clubbing but a few bars with live music always go down well.
Any villa or apartment recommendations?

Sakura7 · 16/02/2019 16:10

Nerja has plenty of bars and cafes to go to in the evening. I think some of them have live music. It's very developed and has plenty of tourists, but it's more relaxed than the big resorts and is basically a normal Spanish working town.

Nerja. It's lovely. My DF lives in the campo about 20 mins from Nerja, and I have an apartment in Competa. I love campo life but Nerja is a great place for a beach holiday!

MrsCasares · 18/02/2019 21:16

Have a look at Estepona. It’s lovely and nearer to Gib.

DreamingofSunshine · 19/02/2019 06:47

I came to say Estepona too. Benhavis is nice too but in the mountains rather than the beach.

mirage937 · 19/02/2019 12:38

We stayed in La Duquesa a few years ago and visited Esteopona both lovely places but keen to try Nerja in future has heard lots of positives about it

budgiegirl · 20/02/2019 23:36

Thanks for the recommendations, I’ve booked a lovely looking apartment in the edge of Nerja, it’s looks very pretty, and I can’t wait! I think I’ll leave Gibraltar for another time, and head to Granada/Alhambra for a day trip instead

We stayed in Nerja last year and loved it. We visited Frigiliana whilst there which was lovely, white washed village with winding cobbled streets.

Muddysnowdrop · 24/02/2019 22:56

Nerja is an hour further up than Benalmadena, and I have gone on a day trip from there to Gibraltar. Long one though.

Shmithecat2 · 25/02/2019 06:22

It's just my opinion, but you're not missing out on much if you don't go to Gib. Bit of a hole....

MrsCasares · 25/02/2019 14:35

Gib is much better than it was since the cruise ships started to come. Watching the planes land - no wonder it’s a captain only runway. Do wonder what the queues will be like at th border following Brexit though.

justaweeone · 25/02/2019 15:22

We stayed in Nerja last summer, had a lovely holiday
Can recommend a nice villa as well

Rade · 25/02/2019 15:26

justaweeone Nice villa? I'm looking for a two bed villa with pool, preferably central / sea front? Would not have a car.

TheSconeOfStone · 25/02/2019 23:06

Granada is much nicer than Gib. Make sure you book well in advance for the Alhambra. It sells out quickly.

girlofthenorth · 25/02/2019 23:24

If you go to Nerja definitely go into the mountains for a day trip - it's just stunning !

justaweeone · 26/02/2019 06:46

RADE
it was this villa, it wasn't the biggest but great location, views, very clean and good communication with the owners
