New York hotel recommendations?

Hello! Can anyone vouch for a good hotel to stay in New York? We went several years ago and stayed just off Times Square. I can't remember the name of the hotel but it felt pretty dated at the time.
We're going on a budget so will be staying somewhere cheap for a 3-4 nights, possibly a guest house.

Then for my birthday DH has agreed to pay for a (relatively!) swanky hotel. Up to £300ish a night, which of course for New York is not swanky at all

I'd really like a view of the skyline, but even 'normal' hotels then charge wayway more for rooms with nice views and it doesn't seem worth it. I suppose we could settle for the lounge having a nice view rather than the room.

We stayed at The Roger on Madison Avenue www.therogernewyork.com

It's a lovely hotel, modern and on weekdays has a free wine hour in the evening! It's right round the corner from the Empire state building, and has rooms with a view.

We stayed at the Library Hotel right by Grand Central Station last year and loved it. Love NY, have fun!

The Edison Hotel great location at Times Square

We stayed at The Night Times Square - decent price and good central location!

We stayed at the Roosevelt hotel, it was lovely and well situated
