DH, DD (7) and I are off to Amsterdam for a weekend in a couple of weeks - any suggestions on what would be good to do with a 7 year old?

Definitely the Nemo science centre.
The Vondelpark has the daddy of all playgrounds! Actually it has more than one good playground so definitely worth exploring.
If the weather is rubbish but your dc needs to let off steam, TunFun in the old Jewish Quarter is a large underground playground with slides, trampolines and climbing frames.
A fun pancake restaurant for children ages 5- 12 years is the Kinderkookkafé (Kids Cook Café) near the Vondelpark. The kids take over the small restaurant by cooking their own pancakes. You don’t have to book - just turn up like any other restaurant or cafe. www.amusingplanet.com/2012/01/kinderkookkafe-restaurant-run-by-kids.html
Blue Boat do the best canal cruises for kids www.blueboat.nl/en/product/kids-cruise/
The Van Gogh museum has a family guide, treasure hunt and hands-on activities.
The Amsterdam Marionette Theatre puts on traditional puppet performances. Because the plays are set to classical music there’s no language confusion, and the costumes are amazing.
Artis Royal Zoo is a fun day out, all the more so if you time your visit to coincide with feeding times.

I blog about Amsterdam and am the family blogger for the City of Amsterdam website. There are loads of suggestions and itinerary ideas on my blog for just that age group. Have a browse and let me know if I can help with anything x

@ricekrispie22 @LadyTrixie thank you both so much for your excellent suggestions! I'm really looking forward to our weekend away now.

LadyTrixie, your blog is great - I think I'd seen a link to the hotel recommendations somewhere else on MN and had booked one of your suggestions (Linden Hotel). I've also booked a table for breakfast at the Corner Bakery - my DD is going to be so happy I found your blog!

Brilliant!! Funnily enough I just saw on Facebook a friend post pictures of her trip to Corner Bakery today with her kids which she went to on my recommendation. They were drinking RIDICULOUS freakshakes and having the best time. Smile

Latest tip is try out the "make your own chocolate" vending machine at Tony's Chocolonely in Beurs van Berlage although it takes an hour until the chocolate is ready. It's new so we haven't been yet but it looks amazing. Have fun!

Definitely Nemo - plan to spend lots of time there!

@LadyTrixie - make your own chocolate sounds great. I'd looked up their shop as I'd wanted to visit - but could only get to an online website to order their chocolate, so this sounds perfect. Thanks so much for all the suggestions - I'm so looking forward to it.

@BearFoxBear - thanks, Nemo is our plan for Sunday...based on what you've said I won't plan anything else!
