Naples - on my own with 3 kids

Hubbie will be away with work, planning a trip with my kids. Would love to fly into Naples for 3 nights- see Vesuvius, Pompeii. I'm not a nervous traveller, but would I be safe enough in Naples by myself as such? We have been to Italy before. Kids will be 14,12 and 9. Any idea where to stay that would be safe for us?
Thanks in advance!

YABU for saying “hubbie.” Can’t get past that but have a lovely trip.

I am a confident traveller and Naples would be the one place I wouldn’t go with kids. I felt very uncomfortable there (we only went for a day trip - staying in Rome). We wanted to stay there but there was no suitable kid friendly hotel. The one we booked was such a shithole we drove back to Rome late.

Lots of men escorting me across the road.

I wouldn't do Naples with young kids. It's too chaotic and there's still a lot of petty crime like pick pocketing.

How about Ischia? You'd get the ferry from Naples, base yourself there and could still do the trips to Pompeii etc.

Could stay at sorrento, very safe and pretty. We just got the local train from there to pompeii. Also ferries to Capri and coast. Lovely beach hotels.

Ha ha ComeMonday!!! I did re-think that term after I had posted GrinGrin!!
Thanks all for great advice...I would be allergic if creepy men were escorting me!!! Good advice so, maybe to fly in and transfer straight down somewhere nicer. Am looking at April. Any suggestions for nice little towns such as Sorrento.

Salerno is quite close to Naples, what about Positano or Amalfi?

Wintersnowdrop · 03/02/2019 11:31

Sorrento, or Sant'Agnello. We stayed in Sant'Agnello a few times, catch the local train to Pompeii and Vesuvius. We also caught the train to the Archological Museum in Naples. Lots of beggers on the train, including very small children. The area by the museum is very run down, litter strewn and I didn’t feel very safe there.

Would you consider Rome instead. So much to do/see there.

The Amalfi Coast is breathtaking. Pompeii, Sorrento and all the wee mountain villages well worth a visit.

Naples itself is one of the few places I have felt unsafe. And I traveled there with 2 men and a friend. Lots to explore and see but I don't think I'd do it on my own with kids.

We stayed here in Sorrento in Oct with teen DS. Very nice hotel, good food, decent mix of nationalities, family run with lovely pool. Best of all does a free shuttle bus into/out of old part of Sorrento every hour. Got it through booking.com
