Beach holiday in August - but not too hot. Where?

Kids really want to go in a beach holiday this year but I hate the heat and my annual leave is in August (no chance of going away at Easter or half term).

It will be me, two teens and one tween and I’d really like somewhere easy/anonymous and touristy with a pool, easy walk to a beach, places to eat etc. Is there anywhere like that that is a pleasant 24 degrees in August rather than 31?

I took the DC to Eurocamp in Toulon the week of the August bank holiday last year and it was great: warm but not too hot to enjoy it: pool, huge sandy beaches in walking distance, easy day trips to the calanques and a gorgeous island with no cars. Flew into Marseille for about £200 return. Cheap and cheerful but a fab holiday and would definitely go back.

We did a campsite in Normandy at Houlgate a couple of times in summer.

This is the Eurocamp link but there are others.

The weather was pretty good (better than S coast of England) & Houlgate has a lovely long sandy beach about 1km from the campsite. It’s a nice town too & easy to get to from channel ports.

South of France, but you may get searing heat or a pleasant 25 degrees. That's the of problem I think if you want warmth in August but not heat, colder places you may not get the warm weather, hotter places it could be what you want or it could be boiling.

In France the smaller resorts such.as Mandelieu La Napoule, Villefranche, Kenton or St Raphael may suit what you are looking for. Very relaxed but Lots of restaurants etc.

Normandy is lovely but can be arctic even in the summer.

We are going to Norway and some of places there have beaches and should be around 22C. Can fly to Oslo with Ryanair very cheapily, we are doing Oslo to fjords around Bergen - around Oslo we are staying at Villa Rorvik which has a private beach, around Bergen / Voss we have a place via Novosol which comes with own motor boat. Also found beautiful beaches in Finland but was further north around Oulu so bit cooler. Lots of whitewater rafting / adventure activities around Voss in Norway and fjords look beautiful.

Could you go somewhere with a warm temp but on the coast so you benefit from a cooling sea breeze? Unfortunately many of the places you describe will be baking in August or you may not get the weather.

Brittany is beautiful and not too hot

The vendee in France has a nice coastline with lots of surfing opportunities for the dc. This accommodation is a good compromise between having lots of teen friendly activities and being peaceful www.hoseasons.co.uk/holiday-parks-in-europe/port-bourgenay-village-pbou

If they are planning on swimming in sea need to look at sea temperatures too. We've been to south of France in summer and it was far more like 31C than 24C but lovely if you are spending most of time in a pool or swimming but just wandering around its too hot for me.

Would have thought temperature wise central France on the coast would work. Never been here but think should be around right temp and close to beach with a pool - end August is often cheaper.

Northern Spain, eg Austria's. Lovely place. Never gets too hot. Here are some suggestions

'Asturias'.

floridaflorida · 03/02/2019 19:20

Channel Islands? Beaches, hotels with pools, lots of restaurants and usually lots of sun.

PizzaPlanet · 11/02/2019 17:19

The alps are hot but not uncomfortably hot in the summer- other Europeans prefer it there to the Med in August. Chamonix etc lovely with lots to do.

LoniceraJaponica · 12/02/2019 00:32

The Azores

For years we had to take our summer holiday in august and baked in spain.majorca, all the greek islands ext ext ...then we discovered the canaries. Although warm all year they never get as hot as these other places in the summer. Tenerife would suit all ages ...great water park ext ...but choose area carefully to avoid black sand. We also found Portugal not as hot as the usual places.

LikeDolphinsCanSwim · 12/02/2019 01:29

The Canaries don't get all that hot, mid to high 20s in August. Fits the touristy and easy criteria.

Springwalk · 12/02/2019 01:49

Central France and coast line inc Provence not too hot.
Switzerland and Austria have the most beautiful ‘beaches’ by turquoise lakes, flower filled mountain walks, cable cars and lots of sports. Plenty to do, warm but not baking. It is stunning in the summer, and Austria is reasonably good value outside the ski season.

Northern Italy around the lakes also good.

pineapplebryanbrown · 12/02/2019 02:00

Croatia isn't boiling but i think with teens I'd go for los Cristianos in Tenerife. Maybe costa adeje.
