Mountain - scenery holiday

We are planning to do a week holiday in Europe in August. I loved the scenery in Switzerland and wondering if there is anywhere Similar and less expensive. Happy yo go self catering. Have been thinking of Slovenia and Norway. Want to connect to nature, relax, swim in lake or pool and do walks; a sunny place ideally, good food but won't be eating out all the time.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Have a look at a place called Garmisch Partenkirchen. It's in the alps in Germany on the Austrian border. The scenery is stunning winter and summer, it's a nice town with good transport links (less than 2 hours on the train to Munich). We've been there loads of times, in winter and summer. It was a novelty going up the Zugzpitz in shorts and sledging on the glacier at the top! There are lots of nice Airbnb and plenty supermarkets for self-catering.

Thank you. Will check it out

French Alps or Pyrenees. I don't think Norway would cheaper.

Norway is eye wateringly expensive.
Check out Bled in Slovenia - it's very popular. Kobarid is also nice and Ljubljana is not far away.

Slovenia is gorgeous. We stayed in Kranjska Gora in July - in winter it's a ski resort but it was a gorgeous base for exploring Slovenia. Half an hour away from Lake Bled, which is a much more popular summer attraction, but we were always glad to retreat to the tranquillity of our little town in the foothills of the Julian Alps!

We stayed here. So lovely - one of the best holidays we've ever had.

Luna9 · 03/02/2019 07:51

Thank you. Norway is out of the question then.

Thank you 'The only' for the recommendation; that place in Slovenia looks like the sort of thing we are looking for.

Seefeld in Austria

Paradyning · 03/02/2019 08:01

Dolomites?

NicoAndTheNiners · 03/02/2019 08:12

@theonlylivingboyinnewcross. Did you drive or fly? That looks really nice. A friend of mine holidayed in Slovenia recently, in the Julian alps and said it was lovely.

asilikeit · 03/02/2019 08:13

Theonly- that looks amazing- where did you fly to/ what was transfer like? Thanks x

We are doing Norway this summer Oslo to Bergen. The flights with Ryanair are very cheap - around £50pp plus luggage. Accomodation we have is around £100 a night self catering for 4 of us - we are first 4 days in Sweden doing wildlife safaris and accomodation there is £200 a night incl breakfast then Villa Rorvik by Oslo around £100 a night with private beach then renting an apartment with own motor boat by Tysse through Novosol for 8 nights for £100 a night which has beautiful mountain views (about an hour from Bergen for fjords and adventure sports). Novosol has lots of accomodation around this price. Temp will be around 21 and sunny. Not sure if eating out will be pricey, Bergen seems very pricey, hotels were £250 a night plus for reasonable one but if you stay a bit away from main tourist areas its not too bad. It's a very wealthy country though so not a place to find bargain prices.

Slovenia....stayed in bled and bohinj. Bohinj was wonderful. Great places to stay and easy access to the mountains by cable car. It was stunning. You could combine or with a few days in another bit of the Julian alps.

Sud Tirol in Italy. Beautiful!

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 03/02/2019 08:31

It was actually a Tui package holiday (bit embarrassed because of the current thread with comments about package holidays being "chavvy") from their Lakes and Mountains brochure. We flew into Salzburg and the transfer was about two and a half hours, but they stop at services and so on on the way. When we were there, we hired a car for the fortnight so we could be independent but went on some lovely excursions organised by Tui too - to Venice, to the Spanish Riding School stud farm, to the caves and so on. The guides were locals who really knew their stuff.

Transfer time would be much shorter if you flew into Ljubljana, though.

Kranjska Gora is tucked away where Slovenia, Austria and Italy meet and you can do a walk to that exact point in the mountains, the Tromeja.

It was honestly one of the best holidays I have ever had. Slovenia is really green, and clean, and unspoilt. Ljubljana is just stunning.

The Dolomites, Sud Tirol.

Unescorted · 03/02/2019 17:47

Pyrenees or French Alps - both areas have good marked walking and maps if you want to go further afield.

Nospringchickendipper · 05/02/2019 17:35

We did the same holiday as you The only living .Fantastic scenery
Booked with TUI got a great bargain for a week. Did our own thing when we were there just booked the caves trip.
Would recommend Solvenia, lovely friendly people ,easy to get around, transport links good.
Lake Bled just looks like it does in the brochures No photo shopping needed.

Funf · 14/02/2019 12:17

We did Norway last year its excellent but cheapest way is by a cruise. Car hire wasn't bad about the same as here drove 5 hours to Trollstigen its fantastic

Daughters been to Lake Bled in Slovenia said it was good, Son did the Spanish side of the pyrenees also good

nornironrock · 14/02/2019 15:53

Check out Austrian Alps near Zell-am-See. Ski accomodation can be had very cheaply in the summer, and you're also not too far from Salzburg. You can either fly, or it's only 11-12 hours from Calais in the car.

Gedge77 · 15/02/2019 12:24

Flights to Geneva Zurich and Innsbruck are cheap in the summer especially midweek. We are flying to Innsbruck and have booked an Airbnb near Serfaus.

Carouselfish · 15/02/2019 12:52

I'm obsessed with Montana and found that in Northern Spain there are some amazing glacial mountainous areas not dissimilar. Makes for a much cheaper holiday.
