We've decided to do without a birthday party for DS1 as he fancies going to Blackpool to see the lights again. He was ill last year when we went so we're hoping he can enjoy it fully this time.
I'd much appreciate it if anyone can recommend a good place to stay. We didn't like the last one but it was a last minute booking.

how about looking at the tourist board website and go with one that is graded by them. if they say it's good it will be, if they say it's ok it will be ok. if they think it is rubbish they won't list it.

hope you have a good time

I used to go to Blackpool as a kid, and it has always been tacky.. but having visited it for a day last week I was appalled. Think it has gone really down hill, the approach road is just a concrete block, then there are loads of car parks, and the front is just full of awful tat shops.
It is very scruffy, and the Tower (which was closed due to high winds) costs an absolute fortune.
Hope you find it more enjoyable than we did!

well yes unicorn, but the lights are amazing for children, and the atmosphere. we live about an hour a way and each time we go the kids love it and we say 'never again..well until the next time'. lov eit for people watching!!

Cheers for that FF.

I've just booked one-t's a BB close to the tower. Only downfall is we wanted parking but at least it has a family room available. I did look at the Imperial but it says guys have to wear a shirt and tie to dine and DH wears one every day so we don't go in for that when we go away. Even just booked a cruise that has no dressing up whatsoever!

Unicorn, we went last year and I loved the tackiness, even wore a cowboy hat
You're right AQ, the kids were thrilled at the lights. I have some lovely pics of their faces as we rode along on the horse and trap

I think I'm a bit late coming to this one but there's a travel lodge or travel inn (can't remember which) next to Blackpool airport, which is only a mile from the Pleasure Beach, and another from the same chain on the South Shore. Last time we went we stayed in a third from that chain in Bishpham, which is up the coast slightly but will try one of these next time (£46 for the room for 4 of us, fab breakfast £7 for adults and children eat free).
