South of Ireland ideas please!

Hello, we are family of four (kids are 14 and 12) plus dog and fancy going to the South of Ireland in the summer and would appreciate some ideas/suggestions please. We are in the NW so would drive and get the ferry across. We normally stay in self catering and are quite happy to rough it a bit. Probably somewhere on/near the coast with places to visit, a pub and local shop in easy reach would be good. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Many thanks.

Do you mean the south as in Cork and Kerry? If so, lots of lovely places to visit in both counties.
If you're using "the South" to differentiate between Ireland and Northern Ireland.... you may want to revisit your choice of words as it is quite offensive.

Sorry, yes just meant the South (Kerry/cork etc), no offense intended.

As above - do you mean Ireland as a whole, or the south of Ireland? If the former, look at Co. Mayo - the Westport area to be precise - it's stunning, great beaches (look at Lousiburgh), loads of self catering, 5 pubs in the village, surf and paddleboard schools, horse riding, hill walking, sea, coarse and fly fishing, good food (try The Tavern pub/restaurant in Murrisk), the Wild Atlantic Way, bike hire - all the good stuff. Cork, Kerry and Clare are scenic, but a bit too popular for my liking. Galway has more cultural stuff to do, I suppose - but it would be Mayo every time for me :)

Offensive to call the Republic of Ireland the South? Watching with interest - I'd like to get down to Cork for a few days this year but would like recommendations of other places to go too.

In NI it's called the south

I love West Cork and try to go there at least once each summer. Skibbereen, Baltimore are both beautiful areas to visit. Gorgeous unspoiled beaches, friendly people and amazing fresh seafood.

West Cork has some fantastic beaches. Doesn't get the same amount of tourists as Kerry but there's a fair whack of beautiful scenery and all that.

@rjp3141 i actually live in Cork. I gather you mean the south of Ireland? Its only offensive to call the Republic the South to people mainly residing in Northern Ireland (ive also lived there). There are people that will call NI Ireland (tends to be the republicans that live there), but others who will get greatly offended that you do, its Northern Ireland and should be referred to as such. People down south (as in the republic of ireland), tend to just call NI the north (that ive met anyway).
If youre looking for things to do, you can do Cork, the Jameson factory (if you like whisky), you can do Kerry and the ring of Kerry (beautiful views), you can travel to Wexford etc that way and see a fair few things. There's also the blarney stone in Blarney, the castle etc. Theres more than enough to see in Ireland, lovely place to visit :D

The Rong of Kerry and West Cork are lovely.
