Suggestions for where to go - May

We are looking to go away as a couple for a big birthday. We don’t have children. Have ruled out Australia/New Zealand/America and Canada due to plans we have later in the year. Don’t fancy Dubai.

We love culture, history and wildlife. Both love taking photographs. Not a fan of sitting on the beach, we like to go out and do stuff instead. Love street food and markets and will try most things.

I have previously swum with sharks and been cave diving, so places with activities are also good. We have done South Korea and have considered Asia again.

Just wondered if there are any places fitting our preferences that we have overlooked that would be good to go to in May? Appreciate any advice.

Key thing I forgot to add - my husband can’t drive and I currently can’t for medical reasons so would probably rule out a few places

Ecuador. We went in April but May should be ok. Go to the Galápagos Islands. No driving needed at all. Or go to Japan and do a rail trip. Again, no driving needed. Look at Russia and the Baltic states. Cruise the Volga. St Petersburg is amazing. There are trips to Guatemala to see Maya ruins which might be of interest.

There are small Group Tours offered by companies such as Steppes that are worth considering. China would be worth looking at and May is a good time to go. You could also look at Bhutan and Tibet and Uzbekistan or Georgia. If you could go in June, this opens up the Arctic.

China and Hong Kong? You could include Tibet, but don't put it on your visa application, just arrange it when you get there.
Vietnam? - great food, no need to drive and good value.

Definitely Sri Lanka! Stunning country, has culture, history, wildlife and beaches if you want them. We had a private driver for 10 day tour in last April, it was just amazing.

It’s wet in parts of Sri Lanka too.
