Skiathos- anyone been?

We are a family of four with DC aged 9 and 11. We are considering a B and B hotel in August in Skiathos. Would there be enough to do?

I have, but not with kids. It isn’t a very big island, and that means you need to book quite a long time in advance to get the accommodation you want. It’s worth remembering that August is the month that Italians choose to holiday, so beaches can be very crowded and noisy, and they aren’t the sort that stretch for miles.

If your dc are looking for water parks and stuff like that this probably isn’t the island for you, but if they like the simple pleasures of sand and sea, a pool, the odd boat trip etc it should be fine. There are often water sports at the beaches, including things like kayaks and paddle boarding as well as the usual ones, and there are rocks to snorkel around.

The public bus is fun in itself, but cheap. Also in Skiathos town you can go to the open air cinema to watch Mamma Mia, which was filmed on the island of Skopelos, and watch the planes take off and land!

The beaches aren't amazing or sandy if that's important to you. It's incredibly busy and overcrowded at peak season.

I liked it but we went off season and didn’t have children. There isn’t tons to do, so I did some of the excursions and a week was enough really.

We went a couple of years ago. Lovely island but not much to do or see to be honest. Our DS was with us (he was 15 at the time) and I think he was pretty bored although he did enjoy a couple of boat trips. I was sick to death of hearing about Mamma Mia by the end of our holiday to be honest! I am also a bad flier and remember the runway at Skiathos is very short so you come down and take-off very sharply, petrifying for me!
