Somewhere in Europe, expensive to fly to and cheap to stay

I won a raffle prize for return BA flights within Europe. We live in Essex. DH and I would like to take a city break for a long weekend some place we wouldn't ordinarily go on holiday (e.g., Athens or Rome or Rhodes, etc) that has great walking and architecture, interesting scenery, great restaurants and maybe live music for the evenings, which is relatively inexpensive to stay (in a decent hotel or B&B). Ideally, it'll be somewhere expensive to get to, in order to maximise the free flights, so Prague, etc, are not under consideration. We are thinking maybe Bucharest or Sicily.

Does anyone have any other ideas? Any thoughts are most appreciated. 🙂

The Baltic states? Moscow? St Petersburg?

Daffodil2018 · 19/01/2019 19:49

Croatia is quite expensive to get to I believe?

How about Crete or Cyprus?

TulipsInbloom1 · 19/01/2019 19:52

Bulgaria? Slovenia?

Croatia is quite expensive to get to I believe?

We used a budget airline when we went and paid about £50 each.

lucky you! Dubrovnik?. Palermo?

Riga is nice. Not sure if it’s still cheap?

Cyprus would be cheap. Furthest flight would be Istanbul at a guess.

BA flights out of City airport (LCY) are usually sold at a premium....and very handy for Essex. ;-)

Or flying from Heathrow/Gatwick (Heathrow more ££) to Marrakesh could be an option? You could stay in a very riad for a reasonable price.

Or look at Porto. You can get some lovely places on AirBNB there and eating out / supermarkets are pretty cheap despite the rubbish £-Euro exchange rate.

Thanks everyone, I'll have a look at these. 🙂

Montenegro

I was going to say st Petersburg. Would they Class that as Europe?

For distance Cyprus is the furthest.

Madeira is pretty and has great walking along the levadas. It’s not particularly cheap, though you can find budget hotels and guest houses. I don’t know if BA flies there.

buttermilkwaffles · 20/01/2019 13:06

Go to Skyscanner type in dates or select whole month, origin airport/s and select Everywhere for destination, select direct flights only and select BA as the airline. The search results should give you lots of ideas....

In Western Europe, Portugal is probably the cheapest country followed by Spain. Most of central and Eastern Europe is cheap once you are there although Croatia is more expensive than it used to be and Dubrovnik more expensive than the rest of Croatia...

Croatia is fairly cheap to fly to though, £50 each way from Edinburgh is quite easy to achieve...so probably similar from London..

Are you going before or after the end of March?

ByTheSea · 21/01/2019 19:59

I'm thinking April

And the best of British luck to you! (As my dad would say).

Lysistrataknowsherstuff · 21/01/2019 20:37

Sarajevo

buttermilkwaffles · 21/01/2019 23:00

No direct flights from UK to Sarajevo as far as I know. Agree that it is well worth a visit though.
