Borneo - nature & beaches

Milestone birthday for DH this year and thinking of Borneo in July. We could stretch to 2.5 weeks and the kids will be 7.5 and just 5 so would need to factor in their tolerance.

I have no idea where to even start, but I know we’d want a decent balance if beaches and nature.

All tips and suggestions very very welcome! Thank you.

I stayed in Kuching in Sarawak and from there as a base we went kayaking (my dd was 7 at the time), saw orang utans in the wild and also visited long houses. The city has a lot of great restaurants and some interesting museums. In Sabah I stayed in Kota Kinabalu - (okay - but prefer Sarawak) - we made a few day trips to the islands off KK, and found the beaches to be very nice and it was not too busy on weekdays - we were there in July. We enjoyed the national park - Mt Kinabalu, hot springs and tree top walk.
We also spent a couple of days in Brunei (stayed in Bandar) and this was also great for tree top walks and a small scale jungle adventure!

Be prepared to see never ending palm plantations they are destroying the country. Whilst there are pockets which still are incredibly beautiful it's becoming less and less. Borneo was nice but I didn't love it.
