Can anyone recommend a good travel guide for the Black Forest?

Going to the Black Forest for first time and am looking for a good travel guide for the area. I usually like to have a browse before buying, but haven't been able to find any Black Forest in book shops (other than in guides for thewhole of Germany, which I don't need). Before I do an internet search, can anyone recommend one that they've found useful? Or any that weren't any good is also useful info.
Equally, any places not to miss/not to visit while we're there?
Expect I'll need to bump this a few times!
Thanks

anyone want to bet how many times I'll need to bump this and whether I'll get an answer at all in time?

Sorry, can't help with the Black Forest. I have a similar problem in that we are going to Le Marche region of Italy and it would appear that there no english guide bok has been published.

Thanks Southeast, this will be really useful. It's just that I like to have a guide book in my hands, and preferably one I've flicked through before buying. Lots of good info on the site you found so have bookmarked, many thanks. Can you remember anywhere in particular you'd recommend we visit?

Came back from Black Forest a few weeks ago and had exactly the same problem - couldn't find a decent guide anywhere, even Stanfords in London. Was most upset because I'm a bit of a travel guide freak!!
In terms of recommendations of places to go, it depends what you're in to. For art/culture, Freiburg is a really nice town. We also went over to France for the day - if you do, Colmar is lovely (v pretty old town, great museum/gallery). Would probably be my top recommendation, even though it's not in the Black Forest! Normally we'd have done lots of walking, but because I'm six months pregnant I could only manage a few miles. Also lots of rain. But the walking is lovely, and very well signposted. Cable car up Mt. Bergen was also v nice, with variety of walks at the top.
Quite a lot of places in the centre of the BF are very touristy and tacky (e.g. Titisee). Wall-to-wall cuckoo clock shops. But quite entertaining!
BTW, we found language a bit of an issue - our German is dreadful, and not much English spoken. If you're anything like us, you might find French an easier compromise.
Sorry, long post, but hope it's helpful. Where are you staying? If near where we were (Munstertal, in SW corner), I can give some more specific recommendations (restaurants etc).
Have a good time!

Thanks Cath. We're staying in Bad Liebenzell which is between baden baden and stuttgart.
We like a mix of things, walking, culture, don't mind the odd tourist trap if it's worth the visit! Also hoping for decent weather so we get some chill-out poolside time. Fortunately I speak German, tho should imagine the local dialect/accents will be fun!

Oh, you're quite a way from where we were. In the middle/north area, I read somewhere that Heidelberg is a really nice city, but that's about as much as I know. Would still recommend a trip to Colmar if it doesn't look too far. I hope you get some decent weather - I'm sure you will. We just seem to take the rain wherever we go, so it's no guide at all!!

lilolilmanchester · 02/07/2007 20:18

thanks again! Fingers crossed for the weather

Hope I am not too late....we are thinking of going to the Black Forest and I requested a brochure from www.germany-tourism.co.uk. It came through a couple of days ago and they have included loads of information - maps/guides/tours etc. Really helpful.

lilolilmanchester · 10/07/2007 14:47

Thanks Lolski, not too late, we aren't going til August. When are you thinking of going?

Hi ya. We are thinking about going early Septemberish or maybe Oct half term. Depends on DP and work !! Just had another look at all the bumpf they sent and they recommend that you log onto www.germanyfaces.co.uk for deals on holidays/river cruising/travel and accommodation or call them on 0207 317 0908 if you don't find what you are looking for. So if you don't have any luck with the other web site maybe that one will help. They have even included info on child safety seats, motoring requirements, visas, festivals etc etc. I sound like a travel agent don't I !!! Very impressive though.

lilolilmanchester · 10/07/2007 15:14

We're already booked. I just like to take a travel guide with me, preferably one I've flicked through in a book shop first but haven't seen any about the Black Forest. We're going with Eurocamp to Bad Liebenzell.
If there are some particular things you'd like me to find out for you while we're in Germany, I can't promise anything but could try!

Thanks. Will let you know if we ever get around to booking it. Have a great time.....and don't eat too much Black Forest Gateau (the main reason that I want to go !!!)

i couldn't find any guides either, in the end got rough guide & lonely planet guides to germany from library. if you put in a request you should be able to get up to date ones in time. you could even just photocopy the bf pages. tourist info offices there are good though.
